At 5:30 PM, Lu Han parked his car in front of the villa and rolled down the window to enjoy a cigarette. Just then, Lu Xue walked out.
"Xue Xue, why aren't you wearing any of the jewelry I gave you?" Lu Han asked, noticing her simple white dress, white socks, and white shoes, with her hair tied back into a ponytail.
"You can't just wear things like that casually," she replied, climbing into the passenger seat, looking a bit downcast. "Besides, it wouldn't match. And honestly, I only agreed to go to this gathering because I couldn't find a polite way to decline."
Lu Han didn't start the car immediately, frowning slightly. "Are your relationships with your classmates not good?"
It seemed odd to him; Lu Xue had such a pleasant personality, was wealthy, and generous—she should be well-liked by many.
"Heh, in our dorm of four, I know there are three separate chat groups excluding me. I bet they have another group where they talk about me behind my back," Lu Xue said, pouting. "If it's like this within the dorm, imagine how it is across the entire class."
"Once, during a big event, I invited everyone to dinner at Shang Song as a gesture of goodwill. You know what happened? Some people still talked behind my back."
"Some accused me of showing off my wealth, while others said I was putting on airs. They think if it weren't for sheer luck, I'd still be begging on the streets instead of being adopted by the Lu family."
"They think I don't know, but I do."
"After that incident, I stopped trying to be nice."
Lu Han nodded. He hadn't attended university, but he understood that interpersonal relationships among college students could be quite complex. From what Lu Xue said, it was clear her classmates were envious of her good fortune.
A girl who should have grown up in an orphanage, facing hardships, now lived a life thousands of times better than theirs—it was natural for them to feel jealous.
"Xue Xue, if tonight's gathering has only a few genuine friends, you shouldn't force yourself to go. Send them a message explaining you have something else to attend to—they should understand," Lu Han advised, stubbing out his cigarette and tossing it aside. "As for those who pretend to be your friends but gossip behind your back, don't worry about them. Their opinions don't matter much."
Lu Xue hesitated, "Is that really okay?"
"Absolutely. Friends are meant to bring happiness. If you're not happy around them, they're not true friends."
Lu Han gently pinched her cheek. "Don't forget, you're Miss Lu. They can seek your favor, but you don't need to cater to their feelings."
"Think about your high school friends—how many do you still keep in touch with?"
"The same will happen with your college friends. A couple of years after graduation, you might not even remember their names if you bump into them on the street."
"Why bother worrying so much?"
Lu Xue fell silent, realizing the truth in Lu Han's words, though they were blunt. "You're right. I won't go."
Deciding not to attend the gathering improved her mood instantly. Still, following Lu Han's advice, she sent brief messages to two closer friends, explaining she had an unexpected engagement.
Putting away her phone, she noticed Lu Han had already started the car and was driving out of the estate.
"Brother, where are we going?"
Surprised that they were going out despite skipping the gathering, she asked curiously.
"I thought you might need some excitement. Let's do something fun."
Lu Han smiled, realizing that his non-biological sister exhibited signs of people-pleasing behavior. It made sense given her background as an orphan, lacking a sense of belonging and security.
He knew from personal experience how one might try to please others out of fear of losing what they have, even if it meant compromising oneself.
As they drove into the suburbs, night began to fall. Chatting along the way, they finally arrived at the top of Qilin Mountain.
From there, they could overlook the entire city of Jiang City, its twinkling lights forming a beautiful tapestry beneath them.
"Wow! It's so beautiful!" Lu Xue exclaimed, opening her arms and closing her eyes, letting her ponytail sway in the cool evening breeze.
Moonlight bathed her face, adding a dreamy quality to her beauty.
Truly a sight to behold...
Lu Han lit another cigarette and couldn't resist capturing the moment with his phone, stepping back a bit to get the perfect shot.
"Brother, this feeling of emptiness is wonderful," Lu Xue said, immersed in the moment. Turning to see Lu Han staring at her intently, she blushed.
"Do you like it?"
"Yes."
"Then I'll bring you here often."
Lu Han smiled. "Hungry? Let's go eat some barbecue."
"Already? But you said we'd do something exciting!"
Lu Xue blinked her large, sparkling eyes, pouting. "You didn't just mean coming here to look at the night view, did you?"
"Don't worry," Lu Han said with a mysterious smile. "Get back in the car."
What followed was truly thrilling. On the winding mountain road, Lu Han demonstrated his impressive drifting skills!
The scenery outside blurred as the car sped downhill, the roar of the engine mixed with the screeching of tires against the asphalt, almost deafening Lu Xue. The smell of burning rubber filled the car, and the seatbelt dug into her shoulders, but she clung to the handlebars, heart pounding wildly.
Yet, she felt exhilarated, screaming with excitement.
When Lu Han finally brought the car to a stop, she calmed down.
"Brother, you're amazing! That was like riding a roller coaster!"
Catching her breath, she relished the adrenaline rush, eager for more.
But she was also curious—how did Lu Han learn to drift? His driving skills were incredible!
"Heh, I told you it would be exciting," Lu Han said, ruffling her hair affectionately. "Are you satisfied now?"
Lu Xue nodded vigorously, then bit her lip nervously. "Brother, can I ask you something?"
"Hmm?"
Seeing her hesitation, Lu Han grew curious.
With a blush, she pleaded, "When you become the vice president of the Su Group, can I be your secretary?"
