The soft glow of the evening sun filtered through the high windows of Wang Yan's estate as she sipped on her tea, her gaze sharp yet warm as she observed Gen, who sat across from her.
"So, Chef Gen," Wang Yan began, setting her cup down with a quiet clink, "the opening ceremony is less than two weeks away. This hotel launch is significant for our brand, and the food served will be just as important as the venue itself."
Gen leaned back slightly, nodding. "Of course, Madam Wang. The menu should reflect the elegance and reputation of your brand. Any specific themes or cuisines you have in mind?"
Wang Yan smiled approvingly. "That's what I like about you, straight to the point. The guests will be a mix of international and local elites. We need something that represents our roots while also catering to a refined palate. I want you to prepare a tasting menu by Monday. We'll be visiting the venue then."
Gen smirked slightly, confidence shining through. "I'll make sure it's perfect. Just let me know any restrictions or preferences."
"None, for now. I trust your expertise," Wang Yan said with finality. Then, with a glance at the clock, she stood up. "I'll also have my daughter join us to finalize the selections. She needs to understand these things."
Gen raised an eyebrow but remained silent, watching as Wang Yan gracefully exited the room.
Monday – The Hotel Venue
Lee walked into the grand event venue, her sharp eyes scanning the luxurious chandeliers, pristine table settings, and the elegant arrangement of floral decorations. It was extravagant—too extravagant for her liking.
She sighed, running a hand through her hair before making her way toward the private tasting room where her mother had asked her to go.
"I don't know why she insists on making me involved in all this," Lee muttered under her breath.
As she stepped into the tasting room, she was greeted by the sight of an elegantly set table. A waiter gestured towards the seat reserved for her, and Lee took it reluctantly.
"Miss Wang, we are waiting for the chef to present the dishes," the waiter informed her politely.
"Great," Lee muttered. "More time wasted."
Just then, the door opened, and Gen walked in, carrying a composed expression. She stopped dead in her tracks the moment her eyes locked with Lee's.
Lee's eyes widened. "You?"
Gen blinked, then smirked, setting the tray down with practiced ease. "Well, well. If it isn't Dr. Lee. Didn't expect to see me here?"
Lee's expression hardened. "What the hell are you doing here?"
Before Gen could reply, Wang Yan stepped into the room, oblivious to the tension. "Ah, good. You two have met," she said with a pleased smile. "Lee, this is Chef Gen. She's the one handling the menu for the launch."
Lee clenched her jaw, glancing at Gen before turning back to her mother. "You should have told me beforehand."
"Would that have changed anything?" Wang Yan asked casually, before continuing, "Now, let's begin with the tasting."
Lee huffed but stayed silent as Gen presented the first dish.
"This is a modern take on traditional cuisine, infused with elements of contemporary flavors to give it a fresh yet nostalgic taste," Gen explained smoothly, placing the first plate in front of them.
Wang Yan nodded in approval as she tasted the dish. "Excellent balance. What do you think, Lee?"
Lee took a bite, trying not to show any reaction. It was good—annoyingly good. But instead of admitting it, she simply nodded. "It's fine."
Gen chuckled, leaning slightly against the table. "Just fine? That's high praise coming from you."
Lee shot her a glare but didn't respond.
The tasting continued, and despite her initial resistance, Lee couldn't deny that Gen's culinary skills were top-notch. Wang Yan, pleased with the selections, finally stood up.
"Everything is settled. The menu is finalized. Lee, stay behind and wrap up any last details with Chef Gen. I have another meeting to attend," she instructed.
Lee's jaw tightened. "Mom, I—"
"No arguments," Wang Yan interrupted, giving her a firm look before gracefully exiting the room, leaving the two of them alone.
The moment the door shut, Lee let out a frustrated sigh. "Great. Just great."
Gen smirked, crossing her arms. "You don't seem too happy to be here with me."
"I'm not," Lee replied flatly. "Why do you always show up in the most unexpected places?"
Gen tilted her head. "Maybe it's fate."
Lee scoffed. "I don't believe in fate."
Gen leaned in slightly, her voice teasing. "Well, you better start. Looks like you'll be seeing a lot more of me."
Lee narrowed her eyes. "As if I have a choice."
Gen chuckled. "Nope. You really don't."
The tension between them lingered, filled with unspoken words and an undeniable pull. Lee exhaled sharply, looking away.
"Let's just get this over with."
Gen grinned. "Gladly."
And with that, their rivalry—and whatever else was brewing between them—continued.
