Taking the dagger out of her inventory, Evelyn tried to examine, but it looked like any other simple dagger. Short and unremarkable.
"Well, I guess it's not that bad. At least I have a weapon now," she grumbled to herself as she bent down to examine the flowers around her.
"Didn't the online forum say that even the most unremarkable object in the tower could be a treasure if utilized correctly? So, then these flowers should be good as well, right?"
Evelyn tried to touch the flowers to see if any information would come up.
*Purple flower *
"Well, that's helpful…" she muttered as she tried the yellow flowers next.
*Yellow flower *
'It was true as they said online, the tower truly didn't give more information than necessary', she thought bitterly to herself.
Using the dagger, she started collecting the flowers around her.
"Never know if they might turn up useful…" she muttered as she started planning.
"I need to find a way to get out of the floor. To get out, I need to complete the floor quest, but the system hasn't given me one… do I need to do something to trigger it?"
As she thought on a feasible way to trigger the quest, Evelyn kept harvesting the flowers around her and putting them in her inventory.
"Since the monsters on the first floor are slimes, maybe I need to defeat a slime first for the quest to appear? But I don't really know how I would defeat a slime. I could probably use 'steal life force', but how do I activate it?"
Using heal had been easy, she just had to put her hand on the patient, and it had come naturally. But if it were the same for this skill, she would have to get close enough to the slime to touch it without it fighting back.
"Ha, as if I could just ask it 'could you stand still while I steal your life force'? But what, then? Use the dagger? I guess it could work, pointy end first and all that… but still…"
Not having considered that she herself might actually have to stab a living creature, Evelyn struggled with the idea.
"Stabbing something just feels so much more brutal… but I guess it's not that different from sucking out its life force…"
Still cutting the flowers around her, she started to contemplate the concept of life force.
"The system supposedly never gives detailed information, only stating the minimum. This leaves it up to the awakened individual to figure out the rest."
"Since the skill just states that I can steal life force from an opponent, does that mean anything I consider an opponent? Could I steal life force from the flowers?"
As soon as she thought it, Evelyn could feel a slight warmth coming from her left hand. Looking down, she could see the yellow flower she was about to cut slowly wither.
"Then, do I need to touch it?" She wondered and held her hand, palm first, towards another flower, imagining its life force coming towards her. Nothing happened.
She then tried to touch it, and it immediately started to wither like the first flower. "Okay then. Seems it works the same way as heal."
Opening up her ability window, Evelyn checked the progression bar to her skill.
*Steal life force (Lvl. 1): 0.04 % *
"So, I get 0.02% progression per flower. Doesn't that mean I need to steal the life force of five thousand flowers to level up the ability??"
Feeling dejected, Evelyn decided to use the ability with both hands simultaneously and got to work.
"Well, it's not like I actually can do anything else at the moment either way. I will need to find some food soon, but I can look for food while I move through the meadow. And levelling up my skills should come first if I want to survive. I'm not really looking forward to killing something with the dagger either, so I'd rather put that off for as long as I can."
And with that mindset, Evelyn leisurely moved through the meadow at a slow pace, making sure she touched all the flowers she could.
By the time she could finally see a forest in the distance, she had already been walking for hours.
Her ability steal life force had levelled up to level 2, and she was already halfway towards level 3. After getting to level 2, the flowers now only gave 0.01% each.
Looking behind, Evelyn could clearly see a trail of dead flowers from where she had walked.
"Considering how long I've walked, I should have started to feel hungry by now, but I'm not. Does that mean I don't have to eat as long as I consume life force?"
As soon as she had voiced her thought, a ding sounded, and a new system message appeared in front of her.
*Information on ability steal life force has been updated*
Clicking on the message, the ability description appeared in front of her.
*Steal Life Force (Lvl. 2): You may take a small amount of life force from your opponent. Higher proficiency in the skill will allow a greater amount of life force to be extracted.
Just as life force is the essential energy that sustains living beings, consuming it can satisfy hunger. *
Seeing that the description had changed, Evelyn smiled. "So, it's like a notebook? The system won't give me the answers, but it will confirm them…"
Deciding to try this out further, Evelyn picked up a single purple flower.
"The purple flower is edible."
Nothing happened.
"The purple flower is inedible?" she tried again. But once again nothing happened.
"Should I try eating one? But what if it's poisonous?" Steeling herself, Evelyn decided to take a risk. She peeled off the curved petals, putting them in her mouth. As she started chewing, a sharp taste assaulted her tongue.
"So bitter!" she exclaimed as she quickly spat the petals out.
A new ding resounded, as the system notified her that the information of the purple flower had been updated.
*Purple flower
The petals of the flower have a bitter taste. *
"Ha-ha, so now it tells me that the petals are bitter…" she sighted. "So, it's not enough for me to guess the information, I actually have to know it for the system to update it."
Having figured this out, Evelyn continued walking towards the forest while simultaneously using steal life force with one hand and trying the various parts of the two flowers with her other.
As she walked, the system kept dinging, recording down the taste of the distinct parts. She also tried the grass, trying to see if it was any different from grass in her real world. It was not.
