Jonas had proof
Jonas met Damian in his office, his expression grim. He put down the evidence - his bank statements, forged documents, and photos of Elsie with Leo and his associates - on the desk. "Damian, as much as I know it's not easy for you to hear, Elsie is planning a big scam to steal from you.
She has been a partner to one Leo Udeh, together with, perhaps, other corrupt lovers siphoning off your wealth."
The photos shook the color from Damian's face. He picked up a photo that had Elsie and Leo, drawn together as their small smiles revealed intimate space. "This… this can't be, " he said, voice cracking with emotion.
Jonas placed his hands on his shoulders. "I am sorry, Damian. But we need to move very fast. If we don't do something, then it's certain they will take everything."
Damian's phone buzzed before he could even make a comment. It was Elsie's message: "Meet me at the warehouse. I'll explain everything.
"Don't go, Damian," Jonas frowned. "It's a trap."
But Damian was already putting on his coat to answer the message. "I need to hear it from her. I need to know why."
Damian was found dead
That night, he drove down to the warehouse. His head was spinning with numbers, questions, and emotions. Upon pulling into the empty lot, his eyes met Elsie's shadowy figure standing there, her face pale and tear-strewn.
"Elsie," he said and stepped out of the car. "What is happening? Tell me the truth."
He had yet to finish his sentence when a car driven at an incredible speed came out of the shadow, turned on its headlights and at that very moment, he was too confused to comprehend what was happening before it hit him, and sent his body flying up and crashing down.
Damian's body hit the ground with a sickening thud, and crumpled into a heap.
A heart-rending scream escaped Elsie's mouth and her hands flew up to cover it, absorbing every shock within her feminine frame. The car sped away, leaving Damian lying like a heap of crushed vegetables in the pool of his blood, not moving.
Elsie the widow inherited everything.
The following morning, news about Damian and his untimely death splashed the news channels, leaving the report about it as having been the saddest accident to befall any man and woman. But those closer to him knew better. Jonas had been utterly crushed, his allegations might be true about Elsie and Leo, but without enough evidence and his friend, he could do nothing.
Now, Elsie was indeed a widow inheriting everything that belonged to Damian. She stood clothed in black for her husband's funeral, and her face was nothing but a mask of grief. However, behind those tears was a flicker of something else - relief.
Leo was next to her, looking confident with selfish thoughts, but spoke softly, "Done. Next step, moving on."
Elsie nodded. Her heart felt heavy but not those feelings of determination inside. She had everything she had ever wished for - a mountain of wealth, power, and control. But at what price?
