A Dangerous Game

Chapter 10: A Dangerous Game

Claire spent the following days playing her part, subtly pulling away from Alexander, ensuring that whispers of her hesitation made their way through the right channels. It wasn't difficult. The tension between them had always been palpable—now, she simply let others believe it had shifted from attraction to distrust.

The strategy was simple: act uncertain, ask the wrong questions, and give their enemies the illusion of opportunity.

But it was a dangerous game.

A Risky Move

Claire sat at a corner table in a high-end restaurant, one of the many places where the city's elite gathered to exchange secrets. Tonight, she was meeting someone Alexander suspected—Ethan Caldwell, a businessman with one foot in the corporate world and the other in much darker dealings.

Ethan arrived precisely on time, his sharp gaze assessing Claire before taking a seat across from her. "Ms. Evans," he greeted smoothly. "I hear you've been having… second thoughts."

Claire took a measured sip of her wine, feigning hesitation. "Let's just say, Alexander Grayson isn't as invincible as he likes to believe."

Ethan smirked. "That's an interesting take. And what exactly has you reconsidering your… alliance?"

She leaned in slightly, lowering her voice. "I don't trust him. Not completely."

Ethan watched her for a long moment before nodding as if he had expected this. "Smart woman. Trust is a dangerous thing in his world."

Her fingers tightened around the stem of her glass. "You seem to know quite a bit about it."

"Let's just say, I've been on the receiving end of his power plays before." He chuckled darkly. "Tell me, Claire, if you don't trust him… what do you want?"

This was it. The moment she had to sell the lie.

She exhaled, glancing away as if making a difficult decision. "Options."

Ethan's smirk widened. "I can provide those."

Alexander's Warning

Claire returned to Alexander's penthouse late that night, her mind still racing from the meeting. He was waiting for her, leaning against the bar with a glass of whiskey in hand.

"You were seen," he said, his voice unreadable.

Claire froze for a split second before regaining her composure. "I was supposed to be."

Alexander's eyes darkened. "You played your role well."

She set her purse down, ignoring the tension crackling in the air. "Did he take the bait?"

A slow nod. "Ethan is convinced you're looking for a way out. He'll come to you again, offering more."

Claire exhaled in relief, but Alexander wasn't done.

He stepped closer, his presence overwhelming. "But let's get one thing clear, Claire. This is a dangerous game, and if you hesitate at the wrong moment, it won't be just you who pays the price."

Her pulse spiked. "I understand the risks."

He studied her for a moment before reaching out, his fingers grazing her wrist. "Do you?"

The touch was brief but electrifying. Claire swallowed hard, refusing to let him see how much he affected her. "I wouldn't be here if I didn't."

Alexander held her gaze a second longer before stepping back. "Good. Because we're just getting started."

Claire had played the game tonight, but she couldn't shake the feeling that she wasn't the only one being tested.

And the deeper she fell into this world, the harder it became to tell where the lies ended and the truth began.
