The Puzzle of the Altar

Chapter 5: The Puzzle of the Altar

Kaito's mind raced. The voice had been clear, almost mocking in its warning. You shouldn't have come. He stepped back from the altar, his eyes scanning the shifting walls around him. The rumble intensified, and the stone beneath them groaned, as if reacting to his movements.

"Do you think it's a trap?" Haru asked, his voice tense.

Yuki was already examining the altar, running her fingers over the carvings. "There's something we're missing. Look—these symbols... they're arranged in a sequence." She pointed to a set of markings that seemed to be in groups of three, each symbol different.

Kaito stepped closer, his heartbeat pounding in his ears. The carvings seemed random at first, but as Yuki traced her finger along the lines, he realized they weren't. They formed a pattern—a code. The symbols shifted in a way that made sense if you looked at them in a certain order.

"Maybe we have to press them in the right sequence?" Kaito suggested.

Yuki nodded, her eyes narrowed with focus. "Let's try it."

They began pressing the symbols, one by one, in the order they'd deciphered. With each press, the rumbling stopped for a moment, then started again, louder. Finally, when they pressed the last symbol, the ground shook violently, and the altar split open, revealing a hidden compartment.

Inside was a small, ancient key, glowing faintly.

"This... this is it," Kaito breathed, his fingers trembling as he picked it up.

But as soon as he held the key, the walls seemed to close in, and the faint whisper returned. You're too late.

Kaito's heart sank. They weren't just solving a puzzle—they were awakening something far darker.
