Chapter 10:The Darkness Unfolds
The Decision
Eloise walks out of the mansion, the weight of her father's words still heavy in her heart. She can barely breathe as the night air hits her face, sharp and cold. Her mind races, the anger and pain fighting for dominance inside her. The city lights blur as she tries to process everything. Marina is gone, her father is a murderer, and everything she once believed about her family has turned into a lie.
She can't go back to her old life. She can't unknow the truth.
Her phone buzzes in her pocket, snapping her back to reality. She glances at the screen: a message from Rafael, one of Marina's closest friends. He had been the only one who seemed to have an inkling of the danger Marina was in before her death.
Rafael: "Eloise, we need to talk. It's urgent. Meet me at the old café by the docks. I have something you need to see."
Eloise hesitates. The café is notorious for shady deals, hidden away from the prying eyes of the public. But Rafael's message feels like the key to the next piece of the puzzle. She can't afford to ignore it.
Rafael's Revelation
The dimly lit café smells of old coffee and stale smoke. Eloise steps inside, her heart pounding. She scans the room quickly, her eyes landing on Rafael at a corner booth. He's dressed in dark clothes, his face shadowed by the low light. As soon as he sees her, he motions for her to sit.
Rafael: "I didn't want to involve you, Eloise, but I'm afraid you're already deeper in this than you realize."
Eloise sits down, the weight of his words sinking in. What could be worse than what she already knows? Her sister's death was a murder orchestrated by her father, and the family she once loved is nothing but a network of lies and corruption.
Eloise: What do you mean? What do you know?
The Unraveling Truth
The rain had started to fall heavily, soaking the streets and washing away the remnants of the day's chaos. Eloise stood in the dimly lit alleyway, her back pressed against the cold brick wall. Her thoughts were scattered, the weight of the past few days nearly unbearable. She'd learned more than she had ever wanted to know about her father's betrayal—and about her sister's murder.
Every step she took felt like she was walking further away from who she once was. There was no turning back now.
She turned sharply when she heard footsteps approaching, the sound of heels clicking against the wet pavement. It was Rafael, his figure coming into view through the misty rain. His expression was unreadable, his eyes betraying nothing of the secret burden he carried.
"You've come this far, Eloise. You need to understand what you're up against."
Eloise took a deep breath. She didn't want to hear it—didn't want to know the extent of the darkness her family had wrapped itself in. But it didn't matter. The truth had already started to eat away at her, and there was no way to stop it now.
"I know." She whispered the words, barely able to get them out. "But why did Daniel kill her? What was the real reason?"
Rafael's face twisted with a grimace. He seemed hesitant, almost as if the answer would break something inside him, but he didn't back down.
"It wasn't about your sister. It was about power."
Eloise's pulse quickened as she tried to digest his words. "Power? What do you mean?"
Rafael looked around, his gaze shifting nervously, before lowering his voice. "Your father... he had plans. Dangerous ones. Marina—your sister—she was going to stop him."
Eloise felt her chest tighten. Her sister had known too much. But what had Marina discovered?
"Stop him from doing what?" Eloise asked, her voice shaking with disbelief.
Rafael took a step closer, making sure no one else could hear them. "Your father's business empire wasn't built on good intentions. He's involved in things—things that could destroy everything if they were exposed. Marina found out, and she was going to use it against him."
The realization hit Eloise like a punch to the gut. Her father's empire wasn't just about wealth—it was about survival. He would do anything to protect the dark deals he'd made, the alliances that kept him at the top. And Marina had stood in the way of all of it.
"So, she had to die..." Eloise breathed, her voice hollow with grief.
Rafael nodded, his eyes dark with regret. "Your father made sure it was clean. He orchestrated it like a master puppeteer."
Eloise's mind raced as she tried to piece together the fragments of information that had been revealed. It was worse than she had imagined. Her father had killed her sister to protect his secrets.
"What now?" Eloise whispered, feeling both lost and determined.
Rafael's gaze softened, but only for a moment. "You need to be careful, Eloise. You're already tangled in this mess. The people your father is working with—they won't stop at anything to silence you if they think you're a threat."
Eloise took a deep breath. She had known the path would be dangerous, but now it was real. She was no longer just a grieving sister—she was a target. But she would never back down.
"I'll expose him. I'll make sure the truth comes out."
Rafael looked at her, his expression unreadable. "Then we better prepare."
As the rain continued to fall, Eloise knew that there would be no turning back. The fight for justice, for Marina, for everything her father ad taken from her, was only just beginning.
The days after Rafael's revelation passed in a haze, each one slipping into the next like a faded memory Eloise couldn't hold onto. Her thoughts were consumed by the same question, the one that twisted inside her like a sharp, unforgiving knot: Why? Why had her father done this? Why had he chosen power over family? Why had Marina, her sweet, naive sister, been the price?
