The creature was unlike anything they had ever seen. Its body was covered in thick, armored plates, and its glowing eyes locked onto them with predatory focus. A low growl rumbled, sending a chill down their spines.
"What the hell is that?" Jake muttered, his hand instinctively reaching for a weapon that wasn't there.
"Doesn't matter," Zack said, his voice steady. "We need to take it down. We've got five minutes."
Jake's eyes scanned the chamber, his mind racing. He spotted a pile of debris near the wall. A broken pipe, a jagged piece of metal, and a cable length. "I've got an idea," he said, his voice grim. "Cover me."
Zack nodded, stepping forward to draw the monster's attention. "Arya, stay back. Let us handle this."
Arya hesitated, her eyes wide with fear. But as she watched the creature move, something caught her attention. Amid the thick armor plating, there was a small, exposed patch of flesh near the base of its neck. It was barely visible but pulsed faintly, like a weak point in its otherwise impenetrable defense.
"Wait!" Arya shouted, her voice cutting through the tension. "I see something!"
Zack glanced back, his movements careful as he kept the monster's attention. "What is it?"
"There's a weak spot!" Arya said, her voice urgent. "On its neck, just below the head. It's not armored!"
Jake's eyes narrowed as he followed her gaze. "You sure about that?"
"Positive!" Arya replied, her voice steady despite the fear in her eyes. "If you can hit it, you might be able to take it down!"
Jake nodded, his grip tightening on the makeshift spear. "Alright. Zack, keep it busy. I'll take the shot."
Zack moved quickly, his movements deliberate as he drew the monster's attention. The creature lunged, its massive claws slashing through the air. Zack dodged, his reflexes sharp, but the beast was relentless.
"Now!" Zack shouted, his voice filled with urgency.
Jake moved in, his makeshift spear aimed at the creature's exposed weak spot. He thrust the weapon forward, the jagged metal piercing the monster's flesh. The beast let out a deafening roar, its body thrashing violently.
"Again!" Arya yelled, her voice filled with determination. "It's not enough!"
Jake struck again, driving the spear more profoundly into the creature's neck. The monster's movements slowed, its glowing eyes dimming as it let out one final, guttural groan. Its massive body collapsed to the ground, twitching before falling still.
The timer flashed above them, its numbers burning red:
[Survivors, 30 seconds remaining]
00:30…00:29…00:28…
"Let's go!" Zack shouted, grabbing Arya's arm and pulling her toward the safe zone.
The group sprinted across the chamber, their footsteps echoing against the metallic floor. As they reached the safe zone, the timer flashed one last time:
00:05…00:04…00:03…
They crossed the barrier just as the timer hit zero. The world around them shifted, the alien chamber dissolving into a blinding light.
Jake and Zack lay on the floor of the safe zone, their chests heaving as they tried to catch their breath. The adrenaline from the fight with the monster still coursed through their veins, and the blinding light of the safe zone slowly faded, revealing a calm, sterile environment. Arya stood nearby, her hands trembling as she stared into the chamber they had just escaped.
"We made it," Zack said, his voice hoarse but relieved. "We actually made it." But Arya wasn't celebrating.
Suddenly, the words flashed before their eyes, glowing in a cold, mechanical font. Zack, Jake, and Arya froze, their breaths catching as the hologram materialized directly in their line of sight. It wasn't projected onto the environment; it was coming from within their own vision as if someone had implanted a screen in their eyes.
"What the hell is this? It happened earlier, but I thought I was just hallucinating," Jake muttered, swiping at the air before him as if he could bat the hologram away. But it didn't move. It stayed fixed in his vision, unbothered by his attempts to dismiss it.
Arya's eyes widened as she stared at the hologram. "It's… it's not out there," she said, her voice trembling. "It's in my head. I can see it, but it's not real. It's like… like it's being projected directly into my brain."
Zack's stomach churned as he realized the implications. "This isn't just a hologram," he said, his voice low and tense. "It's coming from us. From inside us. It's our screen."
The hologram shifted, displaying a series of statistics and information:
ZACK'S SCREEN:
[Participant: Zack Martin]
[Role: Medic]
[Survival Rate: 90%]
[Next Trial: Pending…]
JAKE'S SCREEN:
[Participant: Jake Sanchez]
[Role: Combat Specialist]
[Survival Rate: 95%]
[Next Trial: Pending…]
ARYA'S SCREEN:
[Participant: Arya Smith]
[Role: Engineer]
[Survival Rate: 87%]
[Next Trial: Pending…]
Then, the hologram disappeared.
Arya saw something in the distance; her face was pale, and her expression was horrified. "Guys…" she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Look."
Jake and Zack sat up, following her gaze. Outside the safe zone, they saw other survivors; people who had been running toward the safe zone but hadn't made it in time. Some were still sprinting, their faces twisted in desperation. Others had collapsed to their knees, their hands pressed against the invisible barrier of the safe zone, begging for help.
"There are others…" Arya said, her voice trembling. "They didn't make it."
Zack's stomach churned as he remembered the System's cold, mechanical voice:
[Failure to reach the safe zone will result in immediate termination.]
"Termination…" Zack muttered, his voice filled with dread. "What does that even mean?"
As if in answer, a loud pop echoed through the chamber. One of the survivors—a man in tattered clothing suddenly froze, his eyes widening in terror. Before anyone could react, his head exploded in a burst of crimson, and his body collapsed to the ground in a lifeless heap.
Arya gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "Oh my God…"
Another pop, and then another. One by one, the heads of the remaining survivors exploded, their bodies dropping like puppets with their strings cut. The chamber was filled with the sickening sound of flesh and bone tearing apart, followed by the dull thud of lifeless bodies hitting the ground.
Jake's fists clenched, his face a mask of anger and disbelief. "What the actual f*ck?!" he shouted, his voice echoing through the safe zone. "This is insane!"
Zack couldn't tear his eyes away from the gruesome scene. His mind raced, trying to process what he was seeing. "This… this is what happens if you fail," he said, his voice hollow. "This is what 'termination' means."
Arya turned away, her shoulders shaking as she fought back tears. "They didn't even have a chance…"
The chamber fell silent, the only sound the faint hum of the safe zone's barrier. The ground outside was littered with bodies, their blood pooling on the metallic floor. The timer above the safe zone flashed one final message:
[Trial One: Complete.]
There it was again, the voice that came out from nowhere.
[Attention, survivors. ]
The voice was unmistakable, the one that had announced the rules of the first trial. It sent a chill down their spines, reminding them they were never truly alone.
[The next Trial will commence in 24 hours. Each Survivor must participate in one game per day. Failure to comply will result in immediate termination.]
[Preparation time has been allocated. Use it wisely. Resources and information will be provided to assist in your survival.]
[Survivors are encouraged to strategize and collaborate. Cooperation increases survival probability by 3%.]
[Reminder: Participation is mandatory. Non-compliance will not be tolerated.]
The hologram flickered once more, displaying a countdown:
[Next Trial: 23:59:59…23:59:58…]
Jake glared at the hologram, his fists clenched. "I'm getting really tired of this voice."
Zack placed a hand on his shoulder, his voice calm but firm. "We don't have a choice. If we want to survive, we must play their game...for now."
Jake stood up, his jaw clenched and his eyes burning with fury. "This isn't a trial," he said, his voice low and dangerous. "This is a slaughter."
Zack nodded, his face grim. "And we're just pawns in their game."
Arya wiped her eyes, her voice trembling but determined. "We can't let this break us. We have to keep going. For them… and for us."
The group fell silent, the weight of what they had just witnessed settling over them like a suffocating blanket. The safe zone's barrier shimmered, and a new path opened before them, leading deeper into the System's labyrinth.
But as they stepped forward, the image of the exploding heads lingered in their minds, a grim reminder of the stakes they were facing.
