Chapter 25: Mission Execution
In the following days, Sakumo Hatake took time to thoroughly observe and understand his three new team members.
As a newly formed ninja squad, developing trust and synergy was crucial. As the guiding Jonin, it was his responsibility to ensure each member could unlock their full potential and work efficiently together during future missions.
Sakumo first focused on Yamanaka Chinatsu and Hyuga Ayane.
Though both were freshly graduated Genin, their foundational strength was above average compared to their peers, showing promising potential.
Ayane's Gentle Fist and Byakugan gave her a significant advantage in close combat. Her defensive skills and chakra control were equally impressive. Though her introverted nature made her somewhat cautious in battle, Sakumo saw her potential. With more field experience and mental fortitude, Ayane could become an outstanding combat ninja.
Chinatsu's Mind Transfer Technique excelled in tactical support and long-range control. While her jutsu leaned heavily toward assistance, her ability to coordinate with teammates made her invaluable. Her quick thinking allowed her to adapt strategies on the fly. However, Chinatsu's direct combat ability was relatively weak, highlighting the need for further training in overall combat proficiency.
Naturally, Sakumo's greatest attention was directed toward Uchiha Tsukiko.
Tsukiko's strength far surpassed that of an ordinary Genin. Over several training sessions, Sakumo quietly tested his abilities.
Whether it was taijutsu, ninjutsu, or battle tactics, Tsukiko displayed remarkable maturity and skill. What truly surprised Sakumo, however, was Tsukiko's chakra reserves and control—levels that exceeded not just Genin but even some Jonin.
"His strength is far beyond my expectations," Sakumo reflected. "Not only does he possess the natural talent of the Uchiha clan, but he also wields the Wood Release inherited from Hashirama Senju. Such power… there are few in the entire ninja world who could rival him."
Yet, Sakumo's sharp instincts told him that Tsukiko was still holding back.
He could see it—Tsukiko wasn't showing his full potential. Whether it was out of caution or a desire to protect his trump cards, the boy was undoubtedly keeping something hidden.
"What is he concealing?" Sakumo wondered. "Even at this level, he chooses restraint. It seems Tsukiko has his own plans for the future."
Through these days of close observation, Sakumo gained a clear understanding of his squad.
While Chinatsu and Ayane couldn't yet match Tsukiko's prowess, their talent was undeniable. With sufficient training and experience, they would undoubtedly grow into formidable kunoichi.
As for Tsukiko, Sakumo decided to provide him with even more advanced guidance.
Tsukiko's raw strength already exceeded the Genin standard, but strength alone wasn't enough to thrive in the ninja world. He needed real-world experience and a deeper understanding of teamwork.
Given the squad's overall strength—especially Tsukiko's overwhelming potential—Sakumo realized that continuing with low-level D-rank missions would be meaningless.
"Tasks like finding lost cats and cleaning riverbanks won't challenge them anymore," Sakumo thought. "They need more intense challenges to truly grow."
With that in mind, Sakumo decided it was time for C-rank missions.
Such missions would expose the squad to real combat while strengthening their teamwork. Through field experience, he would further sharpen their skills and prepare them for even greater challenges ahead.
---
The next morning, Sakumo led Tsukiko, Chinatsu, and Ayane to the Hokage's office.
As they walked down the corridor, they passed other Genin squads—some collecting D-rank missions, others submitting completion reports.
Tsukiko couldn't help but notice the dissatisfaction among many young ninja.
"Another cat-finding mission?" one Genin grumbled. "When are we going to get something more exciting?"
Tsukiko chuckled softly. While such tasks were useful for inexperienced Genin, they held little value for a squad already capable of advanced combat.
Upon reaching the mission assignment desk, Sakumo exchanged a few words with the administrator before turning back to the team.
"We're done with the usual D-rank missions," Sakumo announced. "Today, we'll be undertaking a C-rank mission—eliminating a group of bandits near one of the Fire Country's border villages."
The trio's eyes lit up with excitement. C-rank missions not only offered higher rewards but also posed greater risks—exactly the kind of challenge they'd been waiting for.
Sakumo provided further details: a remote village within the Fire Country had recently fallen victim to a group of ruthless bandits.
These criminals didn't just steal—they tormented the villagers, destroyed homes, and even began targeting passing merchant caravans.
The situation had escalated to the point where the local lord had officially requested Konoha's intervention.
"While this is classified as a C-rank mission, be aware that the danger level is higher than usual," Sakumo warned. "These bandits are numerous and merciless. Stay vigilant."
Tsukiko nodded firmly, determination gleaming in his eyes. "This is our first real mission as a team. We'll give it everything we've got."
Chinatsu and Ayane, though slightly nervous, quickly echoed Tsukiko's resolve. Their anticipation outweighed their fear.
---
With the mission confirmed, the team swiftly gathered their gear. Before departing, Sakumo offered one final reminder.
"Remember, teamwork is key. Stick together and avoid reckless actions. Our goal is success with everyone returning safely."
Under Sakumo's leadership, Tsukiko, Chinatsu, and Ayane departed Konoha, heading toward the designated village.
---
The journey took them through the dense forests and rugged hills of the Fire Country.
Sakumo led the way, Tsukiko close behind, eyes sharp and senses heightened. Chinatsu and Ayane flanked either side, maintaining vigilance for any signs of threat.
Periodically, Sakumo paused to study the terrain, offering valuable tips on mission execution and survival tactics. Tsukiko listened intently, committing each piece of advice to memory.
At one point, Sakumo turned specifically to Tsukiko.
"Your strength is undeniable," he said, his tone serious. "But never forget—teamwork wins missions. No matter how powerful you become, never underestimate the importance of your squad."
Tsukiko nodded solemnly, the weight of those words sinking deep into his mind. "I won't let my strength isolate me. I'll lead with my team, not ahead of them."
As they drew closer to the village, the air grew tense, thick with the anticipation of conflict. The real battle was about to begin—their first true test as a team.
