Looking down, he saw Basil, of all people, standing on a skybark vessel hovering just below the cliff.
"Jump, you idiot!" Basil shouted, his usual animosity replaced by urgent concern. "The whole city's gone mad!"
Jorghan didn't hesitate. He leapt from the cliff, landing nimbly on the deck of the vessel. As soon as his feet touched down, Basil signalled to Swana, who stood at the controls.
"Go! Go!" Basil urged.
The vessel lurched forward, pulling away from the cliff just as a group of guards appeared at the edge, shouting and pointing.
"What in the seven hells did you do?" Basil demanded, grabbing Jorghan by the shoulders. "Half the RedVipers are tearing the city apart looking for someone!"
Jorghan showed him the sapphire, its glow now subdued but still visible. "I found what I came for."
Basil's eyes widened in recognition. "Is that... the Arcana Stone? Are you insane?"
Before Jorghan could respond, Swana called from the helm, "Hold on! We've got company!"
The flying demons had spotted them and were now in pursuit, their wings cutting through the air with frightening speed.
But Swana wasn't the clan's best pilot for nothing. She sent the vessel into a steep dive, plunging between the floating islands of Driftrock with reckless precision. The demons followed, their screams of frustration echoing across the void.
"GO! GO! GO!" Basil yelled unnecessarily as Swana already had the craft at full speed, racing toward the edge of the island.
The vessel shuddered as something heavy landed on its stern—one of the demons had managed to catch up. Its claws dug into the bulk hull, anchoring it firmly as it began to crawl toward the passengers.
Jorghan staggered to his feet, ignoring the pain from his wounds. The sapphire pulsed against his chest, its rhythm matching his racing heartbeat.
"Get down!" he commanded the others, drawing on his remaining mana reserves.
[Blood Wave]
The wounds on his back and hand opened wider as he controlled his own blood, shaping it into a razor-sharp crimson arc that swept across the vessel's deck. The demon, caught mid-crawl, had no time to react before the wave sliced through its torso, severing it cleanly.
The bisected creature fell away, tumbling into the void below as Swana pushed the skybark vessel to its limits. They cleared the edge of Driftrock, plunging into open air beyond.
Behind them, Blackhorn's roar of fury echoed across the chasm, a promise of vengeance that sent shivers down their spines.
"What did you DO?" Basil demanded, staring at Jorghan with a mixture of awe and horror.
Jorghan sank to his knees.
Swana guided the vessel into a bank of clouds, using the cover to mask their escape route. Her hands moved with practiced precision over the controls, coaxing every bit of speed from the craft.
"The RedVipers will hunt us to the ends of the domain for this," she said, her voice carefully controlled. "And Blackhorn... he doesn't forgive."
Jorghan closed his fingers around the sapphire, feeling its power resonate with his own. "They can try," he replied, a strange certainty filling him.
The skybark vessel disappeared into the cloud bank, leaving Driftrock and its furious demon behind.
As Driftrock receded behind them, lost in clouds and distance, Jorghan allowed himself a small smile of satisfaction.
