The darkness seemed to press in around them, making it hard to breathe. Emily's heart was racing as she strained to hear the whisper again, but there was only silence.
"Julian, what's going on?" Marcus demanded, his voice low and even.
"I don't know," Julian replied, his voice tight with annoyance. "Rachel, can you get the lights back on?"
There was a pause, and then Rachel's voice came from the doorway. "I'm trying, Julian. But the whole building seems to be affected."
The team sat in silence, waiting for the lights to come back on. But as the minutes ticked by, the darkness began to feel oppressive, like a physical presence in the room.
Emily shivered, despite the warmth of the summer evening. She didn't like this one bit.
Suddenly, a faint glow appeared in the corner of the room. It was Ethan, holding up his smartphone to provide a little light.
"Thanks, Ethan," Julian said, his voice a little more relaxed. "I think we can assume this isn't just a minor electrical issue."
The team began to murmur among themselves, speculating about the cause of the blackout. But Emily's attention was focused on the whisper she had heard. Who had said that? And what did they mean?
As she pondered these questions, the lights flickered back to life. The team blinked in the sudden brightness, looking around at each other in confusion.
"Okay, let's get back to business," Julian said, his voice firm. "We have a case to discuss."
The team nodded, settling back into their seats. But Emily couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. She glanced around the table, wondering if anyone else had heard the whisper.
Marcus was frowning at the file in front of him, his brow furrowed in concentration. Ethan was typing away on his laptop, his eyes fixed on the screen. Lucas was leaning back in his chair, a look of boredom on his face. Harrison was scribbling notes on a pad of paper, his eyes narrowed in thought.
And Julian... Julian was watching her. His eyes locked onto hers, a faint smile playing on his lips.
Emily felt a shiver run down her spine. What did Julian know? And what was he hiding?
The team spent the next hour discussing the case, tossing around ideas and strategies. But Emily's mind kept wandering back to the whisper. Who had said it? And what did they mean?
As the meeting drew to a close, Julian leaned forward, his eyes glinting with excitement. "I think we have a good shot at winning this case," he said. "But we're going to have to be careful. The opposition is going to be tough."
The team nodded, making notes and muttering to each other. But Emily just sat there, her mind racing with questions.
What was going on? And what did it have to do with the whisper?
As the team began to file out of the conference room, Emily lagged behind. She wanted to talk to Julian, to ask him if he had heard the whisper.
But as she approached him, she saw something that made her blood run cold. On the whiteboard behind Julian, someone had scrawled a message in red ink.
"You shouldn't have taken this case."
Emily's heart was racing as she stared at the message. Who had written that? And what did they mean?
She turned to Julian, but he was already gone, disappeared into the darkness of the hallway.
And Emily was left alone, wondering what was going on, and what was waiting for her in the shadows.
