Chapter 26: Ghosts of the Past

The Storm Reaper flew low over the jagged canyon, its battered hull groaning from the battle's aftermath. The artifact sat in its containment unit, inert for now, but everyone knew it was a temporary reprieve.

Lucien leaned against the railing, rubbing his temple as the cool night wind whipped through his hair. He had faced bounty hunters, warlords, and entire fleets, but something about Veyna and her Black Veil sent a chill down his spine. They weren't just after power—they understood the artifact in ways he didn't. And that? That was very bad news.

Footsteps approached.

"You look worried," Evelyn said, leaning beside him.

Lucien scoffed. "What gave it away?"

"The fact that you're not grinning like an idiot for once."

He exhaled sharply. "You think I should've given it to them?"

Evelyn shook her head. "No. But I think you know we can't keep running forever."

Lucien tapped his fingers on the railing. "I prefer running. Keeps me from having to deal with things like existential horrors and mysterious secret organizations."

Evelyn gave him a look.

"…Fine," he admitted. "Maybe we should start getting some answers instead of just dodging bullets."

Evelyn smirked. "There's the reckless idiot I know."

Lucien rolled his eyes but couldn't help the grin tugging at his lips.

That was when Selene appeared at the hatch, her expression grim.

"You both need to see this."

Secrets in the Dark

The dimly lit engine room buzzed with quiet tension. Victoria and Marion stood over a flickering holographic screen, while Rosie hovered nearby, arms crossed.

"What is it?" Lucien asked.

Victoria pointed to the display. "This isn't just an artifact."

Lucien frowned. "Well, yeah, we figured that out when it possessed my ship."

Victoria shook her head. "No, I mean… this thing was designed. It's not just some ancient relic—it's a piece of technology. Advanced technology."

Marion ran a hand through her hair. "I've seen a lot of illegal black-market tech, but this? This is something else. It's almost like it's alive."

Evelyn's expression darkened. "And Veyna said her people created it."

Rosie whistled. "So… bad guys with a god-tier artifact, got it. What's new?"

Victoria exhaled. "We found something else. A transmission."

Lucien blinked. "From who?"

Victoria hesitated. "From before we found the artifact. Before it activated."

She pressed a button, and the static-filled transmission played.

A deep, modulated voice crackled through the speakers.

"To the one who claims this relic… you hold the key to what was lost. But beware—the Architects will come. And they will not stop until they have reclaimed what was once theirs."

Silence.

Then:

"If you seek the truth, follow the path to the First Vault."

The transmission ended.

Lucien ran a hand through his hair. "Well. That's not ominous."

Selene sighed. "And we were just starting to enjoy being hunted by one enemy."

Evelyn crossed her arms. "The First Vault… that sounds like a lead."

Lucien nodded. "Then I guess we're going treasure hunting."

Marion smirked. "Oh, this is going to be fun."

Meanwhile…

Aboard the Black Veil ship, Veyna stood in the command chamber, her silver eyes fixed on the artifact's last known location.

A masked figure flickered to life in a hologram before her.

"You failed." The voice was cold. Mechanical.

Veyna's jaw tightened. "Graves won't hold onto it forever. He's reckless. He'll make a mistake."

The figure's head tilted. "Perhaps. But we cannot afford delays. The First Vault must remain buried. If he finds it…"

Veyna smirked. "Then I'll make sure he doesn't leave it alive."

The hologram flickered out, leaving her alone in the darkness.

Outside, the storm raged on.

And the hunt had just begun.
