The crew tensed as Lucien's grip tightened on the communicator. His voice was flat, wary. "Didn't expect to hear from you, Elias. Thought you were dead."
The voice on the other end let out a slow, knowing chuckle. "You always did underestimate me, Lucien. But let's skip the pleasantries. You have something I want. And I have something you need."
Selene's daggers gleamed in the dim light. "He's stalling."
Evelyn adjusted her monocle, fingers twitching toward a nearby control panel. "Or baiting."
Rosie cracked her knuckles. "Either way, I vote we shoot first."
"Steady," Lucien murmured, his mind racing.
Elias had always been a step ahead. A master strategist, a manipulator. The last time Lucien had crossed paths with him, it had cost him his old crew. His old life.
And now here he was.
"What do you want, Elias?"
Static crackled before Elias spoke again, voice calm, almost amused. "*You already know, Captain. That little trinket you stole? It's more than just an artifact. It's a *key.**"
Lucien exchanged glances with Evelyn and Victoria. "A key to what?"
"To something buried in the Crimson Vault. Something old. Something powerful."*
Marion scoffed. "Great. Another cryptic villain speech. Just once, I'd love a straightforward bounty hunter."
"And why should I believe you?" Lucien challenged.
Elias sighed. "Because I know where the Forgotten Archive is."*
Silence fell over the cabin.
Evelyn's breath hitched. Selene's eyes narrowed. Even Valeria, usually unbothered by danger, straightened in interest.
Lucien exhaled. "And what's the catch?"
"Meet me, alone, and I'll give you the location."*
"Not happening."*
"Then I suppose I'll just let the Empire, the Crimson Hand, and every sky pirate in the Black Reach know where you're hiding."*
Rosie swore. "Bastard's got us cornered."
"You have one hour, Captain."* The line went dead.
Divided Loyalties
Lucien let out a slow breath, running a hand through his hair. "Well. That's not ideal."
"Understatement," Selene said coolly. "He's setting a trap."
"Obviously," Evelyn muttered. "But if he truly knows where the Archive is…"
"We can't risk it," Victoria said, her voice steady. "We need that knowledge."
Marion folded her arms. "I assume you're not seriously considering going alone?"
Lucien smirked. "When have I ever followed orders?"
"Constantly," Valeria chirped. "You just pretend you don't."
Rosie leaned against the railing. "So what's the plan, fearless leader?"
Lucien tapped the artifact, its soft glow reflecting in his eyes. "We give Elias what he wants. But on our terms."*
Selene's lips curled into a ghost of a smile. "Now you're speaking my language."*
