Chapter 34: A Gambler’s Escape

Lucien exhaled sharply, eyes darting between the new arrivals. "Alright, I'll admit," he murmured, "that's a lot of people."*

"You think?" Rosie snapped, firing another round.

Balthazar remained eerily calm as the ruins swarmed with his forces. "Surrender now, Captain Drake, and I promise to make your death somewhat painless."*

Lucien tilted his head. "Somewhat? See, that doesn't exactly inspire confidence."*

"I was being generous."*

Selene tensed beside him, one hand resting on a hidden throwing knife. "We need an exit. Now."*

"Working on it," he muttered, calculating their odds. They were surrounded. Outgunned. And running out of time.

Evelyn was already tinkering with something in her coat, her sharp eyes scanning their surroundings. "I can overload the aether disruptor—cause a burst strong enough to blind them for a few seconds."*

"Define 'a few'," Marion asked, already sizing up the enemy formation.

"Three seconds, maybe four."*

Lucien nodded. "Long enough for us to get the hell out."*

"And how do you suggest we do that?" Victoria asked, stepping closer, her mechanical joints humming softly.

Lucien grinned. "We fall."*

Rosie's eyes widened. "Oh, I like where this is going."*

Balthazar's patience seemed to be thinning. "Last chance, Drake. Hand over the artifact or—"

"Valeria!" Lucien shouted. "Do the thing!"*

Valeria didn't hesitate. With a manic grin, she hurled a vial at the ground—an instant later, a violent BOOM sent shockwaves through the ruins, a thick cloud of shimmering smoke erupting around them.

"Now!" Evelyn activated her device, and a burst of energy pulsed outward, the shockwave briefly disorienting their foes.

"Jump!" Lucien grabbed Marion's hand and bolted for the crumbling edge. Without hesitation, he leaped—Rosie cackled and followed suit, Valeria shrieking in delight.

Victoria and Selene moved as one, Evelyn clutching onto Victoria's arm as the automaton carried her mid-air.

For a heart-stopping second, they were freefalling through open sky.

Then, from below, the unmistakable whirr of mechanical wings—Lucien's beloved Storm Reaper soared into view, grappling hooks shooting out as the crew clung on for dear life.

"I swear, Lucien," Evelyn panted, "one day, your insane plans will get us all killed."*

"But today is not that day!" he grinned.

Above, Balthazar watched them escape, his expression unreadable. Then, slowly, he smirked.

"Run all you like, Captain Drake," he murmured. "The hunt has only begun."*
