Crossing the Line

The ride back to Kingston Enterprises was thick with silence. Sophia could feel the weight of Alexander's gaze on her, though he said nothing. He hadn't commented on her outburst during the meeting with Damien Blackwood, but something told her he wasn't the type to let things slide.

Finally, as the car smoothly pulled up to the building, Alexander spoke.

"You spoke for me back there," he said, his voice quiet but firm.

Sophia turned to face him, meeting his piercing blue eyes. "Was I wrong to?"

A muscle ticked in his jaw. "You were bold."

She exhaled slowly. "You hired me to be more than just a shadow, Mr. Kingston. If you expect me to sit quietly while someone undermines you, then maybe you hired the wrong person."

The air between them grew charged.

"Careful, Miss Evans," he murmured. "You're walking a very thin line."

Sophia swallowed. "And yet, I'm still standing."

For a moment, she thought she saw a flicker of amusement in his expression, but it was gone before she could be sure.

"Get back to work," he finally said, stepping out of the car.

She exhaled, following him into the building, her heart still hammering in her chest.

An Unexpected Invitation

The rest of the afternoon was relentless. Sophia barely had time to breathe between meetings, calls, and rescheduling last-minute changes for Alexander's upcoming business trip.

By the time the clock neared 8 PM, the office had emptied, but Alexander was still at his desk. Sophia glanced at her watch. Her shift was technically over, but leaving without checking in didn't seem like an option.

She knocked lightly on his office door. "Do you need anything else before I leave?"

He looked up from his laptop, his gaze assessing. Then, to her surprise, he closed the lid. "Are you hungry?"

Sophia blinked. "Excuse me?"

"I assume you haven't eaten since lunch," he said casually, standing and grabbing his suit jacket. "There's a restaurant a few blocks from here. Join me."

Her breath hitched. Was this… an invitation?

"Are you asking or ordering me to come?" she asked, crossing her arms.

His lips twitched slightly. "Would it make a difference?"

Sophia hesitated. Everything about this screamed dangerous. But she had spent an entire day being tested by this man, and if she backed down now, she'd regret it.

"Fine," she said, grabbing her bag. "But I pick the restaurant."

Alexander raised an eyebrow, but instead of arguing, he simply nodded. "Lead the way, Miss Evans."

As they stepped out into the cool night air, Sophia couldn't shake the feeling that this was more than just dinner.

It was another test. Another game.

And she wasn't sure who would win.
