Chapter 7: The Flames of Arcane Qi

The night after Ren's awakening, he stood in the courtyard once more. The air around him was different—charged, alive. His body still tingled with the remnants of his Arcane Qi awakening. He could feel something new flowing through him.

Haruto and Master Takeda watched him closely.

"Arcane Qi is not like Martial Qi," Haruto explained. "It does not merely enhance the body—it shapes the world around you. It is the energy of sorcery."

Master Takeda tapped his cane against the ground. "Most who awaken Arcane Qi specialize in one of the Four Great Elements: Fire, Water, Wind, or Earth. Some rare individuals develop even higher forms—Lightning, Ice, or Shadow. But that is beyond you for now."

Ren nodded. "So, what is my element?"

Haruto stepped forward and handed Ren a small, ancient stone. Strange inscriptions were carved into its surface. "This is a Qi Affinity Stone. Pour your Arcane Qi into it, and it will reveal your elemental nature."

Ren took a deep breath and focused. The blue energy within him pulsed. He guided it, letting it flow into the stone.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then—

FWOOSH!

A brilliant blue flame erupted from the stone. The fire crackled, swirling unnaturally, almost alive.

Master Takeda's eyes widened. "Flames… but not normal ones. Soulfire."

Ren's breath hitched. "Soulfire?"

Haruto's expression was unreadable. "Soulfire is a rare and dangerous Arcane Qi manifestation. Unlike ordinary fire, it does not simply burn flesh—it burns the soul itself. It is the flame of destruction… and purification."

Ren stared at the flickering blue flames in his palm. Fire that burns the soul…?

Master Takeda sighed. "With Soulfire, your magic is not just a tool—it is a curse. If you do not master it, it will consume you."

Ren tightened his fist, extinguishing the flame. "Then I'll master it."

Haruto smiled slightly. "Good. Then let your training begin."

First Lesson: Controlling the Flame

Ren stood in the center of the training field. A single candle was placed before him.

Master Takeda pointed at it. "Your first task—light the candle without burning anything else."

Ren frowned. "That sounds simple."

Takeda chuckled. "Then do it."

Ren focused. He reached deep within, feeling the Soulfire stir inside him. He guided the energy to his fingertips—

FWOOSH!

The entire candle melted into a puddle of wax.

Ren blinked. "Uh…"

Takeda sighed. "Again."

Ren tried once more. This time, he held back—but the flame sputtered wildly and refused to form properly.

Hours passed. Again and again, Ren tried to control his flames. Each time, they either burned too fiercely or refused to ignite at all.

Sweat dripped down his brow. Why can't I control it?

Haruto watched silently before stepping forward. "Ren. You are treating your flame like a weapon. But it is not a sword. It is a part of you."

Ren exhaled. A part of me…

He closed his eyes. Instead of trying to force the flame, he let it flow naturally. He reached for it, not as a tool, but as an extension of himself.

Flicker.

A small blue flame danced at his fingertips.

Ren opened his eyes. He flicked his fingers—and the candle lit perfectly.

Master Takeda grinned. "Good. Now we can truly begin."

Ren smirked. This was only the first step.

He would master Soulfire—and forge his own path to power.
