The morning sun barely crested the horizon when Lady Kagura led Ren to the secluded training ground. The air was thick with the scent of charred wood and scorched earth—evidence of countless battles fought in this sacred space.
"Today, we test your Soulfire in combat," Kagura announced, standing in the center of a vast, circular clearing. "You've learned to control the flame, but wielding it in battle is a different matter entirely."
Ren stood ready, his muscles tense with anticipation. He had spent hours refining his control, but now was the true test. Across from him, a cloaked figure emerged from the shadows, its face obscured by a smooth, featureless mask.
"Your opponent is a Fireborne Wraith," Kagura explained. "A construct designed to push you beyond your limits. It does not tire, it does not feel pain. It will fight until either you emerge victorious or you fall."
Before Ren could react, the wraith lunged. A trail of searing fire followed its movements, its strikes swift and unrelenting. Ren barely dodged the first attack, feeling the heat singe his skin.
He retaliated, summoning a burst of Soulfire to his palm and lashing out. The wraith twisted mid-air, evading the strike with unnatural agility. Ren gritted his teeth—controlling the flame in a still meditation was one thing, but weaving it into combat was another.
"Focus!" Kagura's voice rang out. "Your flame is not an extension of your body—it is an extension of your will!"
Ren exhaled, centering himself. He let his instincts guide him, not forcing the fire, but letting it flow. As the wraith lunged again, he sidestepped and channeled a focused stream of blue flame from his fingertips. This time, the fire obeyed his command, striking the wraith and sending it staggering back.
A flicker of triumph ignited within him—but the wraith recovered instantly, its entire form now engulfed in crimson fire. With a screech, it unleashed a torrential blast of flame toward Ren.
Instinct took over. Ren raised his hands, summoning a barrier of Soulfire to meet the incoming inferno. Heat clashed against heat, the air between them shimmering with intensity. The force of the impact sent Ren skidding backward, but he held firm, teeth clenched against the raw power surging through him.
Then, in a single, decisive motion, he compressed his energy into a concentrated blast. The blue flames surged forward, striking the wraith square in the chest. It let out a final, unearthly wail before dissolving into embers.
Ren stood there, panting, his hands trembling. The battle had been short but brutal, testing both his resolve and his newfound control.
Kagura approached, arms crossed. "Not bad," she admitted. "You're beginning to understand. But this is only the first step."
Ren wiped the sweat from his brow, a determined gleam in his eyes. He had faced his first real battle with Soulfire—and survived.
And he was ready for more.
