Chapter 13 – Treason and Spectacle

🎵 The last I checked, cheating was treason 🎵

Rule #25

System's Rule (crossed out): A villain must never expose their enemies with malice. True justice is about reform, not revenge.

Eleanor's Rule: If you're going to burn a bridge, set the whole damn city on fire while you're at it.

The Banquet of the Carters

The grand ballroom of the Carter estate glittered with golden chandeliers, the air thick with the scent of aged wine and delicate florals. This was the annual banquet—a night of decadence where the wealthy and powerful gathered, cloaked in civility while tearing each other apart behind gloved hands.

This year, however, the destruction wouldn't be subtle.

I stood at the head of the ballroom, bathed in the glow of the massive chandelier. My gown, a deep blood-red satin, clung to my frame like liquid sin. Every eye in the room was on me—not out of admiration, but because they could sense it. Something was coming.

Alexander stood a few feet away, a perfect picture of aristocratic arrogance. He looked at me the same way he always had—with cold detachment, as if I were an obligation rather than a fiancée. Lily stood near him, glowing with false innocence.

I lifted my glass of wine, smiling as the guests settled into a hushed anticipation.

"Tonight," I began, voice smooth as silk, "I have a rather special announcement."

Alexander tensed beside me. Lily's fingers twitched against her champagne flute.

I snapped my fingers.

The ballroom dimmed, and the massive screen behind me flickered to life.

For a few seconds, nothing but silence. Then—the video began to play.

It was artful in its destruction. The angle was perfect, the lighting intimate, the moans unmistakable. Alexander's voice, husky and sinful, whispered Lily's name like a prayer. Her responding gasp echoed through the ballroom, sending a ripple of gasps and hushed whispers through the crowd.

The Carters prided themselves on elegance. This was anything but.

Lily paled. Alexander's face darkened with something primal—rage or panic, I didn't care.

I let the video play for a few seconds more, ensuring that everyone understood exactly what was happening. Then, with a calculated flick of my wrist, I raised my glass once more.

"To treason oh sorry I meant cheating," I said, voice rich with amusement. "May you both rot in it."

The guests erupted. Some laughed, others whispered furiously, scandalized beyond belief.

I turned to Alexander, meeting his livid gaze with an unimpressed stare. "Oh, and the engagement?" I reached up, tugging the glittering engagement ring from my finger. I didn't throw it. No, I simply placed it on the silver tray held by a passing waiter.

"Consider it null and void."

Then I turned on my heel and walked away.

Tonight wasn't just about revenge.

Tonight marked the beginning of my rule.

[Theatre Segment – Interview with Alexander Carter]

[Scene opens in a black void, a single spotlight illuminating Alexander Carter.]

Interviewer (System): Mr. Carter, would you like to comment on the events of the banquet?

Alexander: Comment? (He lets out a humorless laugh.) My fiancée—no, my ex-fiancée—just publicly humiliated me in front of half the aristocracy.

Interviewer: Are you angry?

(Alexander tilts his head, his expression unreadable.)

Alexander: I should be, shouldn't I? But that's the thing with Eleanor. (He exhales sharply.) . I should've known better.

Interviewer: And Lily?

(A beat of silence. His jaw tightens.)

Alexander: No comment.

(The spotlight flickers, and the scene fades to black.)
