Chapter 15 – A Desperate Gamble

Rule #32:

System's Rule (crossed out): Falling from grace is temporary—heroes always rise again.

Eleanor's Rule: Once I drag you down, you never climb back up.

Alexander Carter – The Crumbling Empire

Alexander sat in his office, staring at the latest financial reports, his jaw clenched so tightly it hurt.

Red.

Everything was red—plummeting stocks, declining revenue, investments bleeding dry.

Carter Enterprises was on the verge of collapse.

And it was all because of her.

Eleanor Sinclair.

He should have seen it coming. The moment she took control of her father's company, she had ruthlessly cut them off from their most lucrative partnerships. Then came the whispers—Z Enterprises, an emerging dark horse in the business world, had backed her. With their resources and her cunning, she had systematically strangled Carter Enterprises.

And now?

They were on the brink of bankruptcy.

The only reason they weren't filing yet was Z Enterprises.

They had reached out privately, offering financial backing.

At first, Alexander had been skeptical—why would Eleanor's strongest ally betray her to save him?

But their representatives had reassured him. "She's too controlling. Too reckless. We need someone else in power."

He had to believe them.

This deal was his only chance to rebuild.

His only way to prove that he could rise again.

But before anything else—before negotiations, before contracts—he needed to see her.

Lily.

---

The apartment was dimly lit when he stepped inside. The scent of lavender and something faintly sweet lingered in the air.

Lily was curled up on the couch, dressed in one of his shirts, her delicate fingers tracing absent patterns over the silk fabric.

She looked up as he entered, her big doe eyes shining with something soft. Something pure.

"Alex," she murmured, sitting up.

The tension in his shoulders eased at the sound of her voice.

Lily was the only thing that still felt right.

After their relationship was exposed, the backlash had been brutal. She had quit her job, cutting ties with the industry, choosing to stay with him despite everything.

And that meant everything.

He crossed the room, sinking onto the couch beside her, pulling her into his arms.

"You're warm," she whispered, resting her cheek against his chest.

"You're everything," he murmured, pressing a kiss to the top of her head.

Her fingers curled into his shirt. "How bad is it?"

He exhaled slowly. "Bad. But Z Enterprises is willing to finance us."

Lily pulled back slightly, concern flickering in her gaze. "Aren't they close to Eleanor?"

His jaw tightened at the mention of her name. "Not close enough. They don't trust her anymore. They need someone else in power—someone they can work with."

Lily hesitated, then touched his face gently. "I believe in you."

That was all he needed.

For the first time in a long while, Alexander felt hope.

He was going to take this deal.

He was going to rise again.

And when he did—

He was going to destroy Eleanor Sinclair.
