Becoming Husband and Wife

Ava recoiled, trying to dodge him.

Liam's kiss grazed her chin.

Ava felt the temperature drop a solid ten degrees around him.

The hand that had been holding her chin slid down her back, wrapping around her waist. He asked, "Why'd you tell Ethan I'm your cousin?"

Ava lowered her gaze, saying softly, "Look, we're getting a divorce soon anyway. No need to make a whole production out of telling everyone we're married. Plus, your family's kinda a big deal. If my coworkers find out after the split, they'll judge me. I don't want to be labeled the 'rich guy's cast-off wife.' Saying you're my distant cousin is just easier."

Liam gave her a knowing look. "You've thought this through pretty thoroughly."

Ava gave a self-deprecating chuckle. "What else am I gonna do? It's just survival instinct for a nobody."

"You're no nobody. There aren't many people in this city who can tell me what to do." A teasing smile played on his lips as he looked at her.
