Chapter 7: The Reckoning
Darkness enveloped Luna. It wasn't the absence of light—it was something deeper, something alive. The moment she accepted the pact, the abyss had claimed her, reshaping her existence into something neither human nor void. Her body felt weightless, yet heavy, as if she were both sinking and rising at the same time.
Then, with a violent gasp, she emerged.
She found herself standing on solid ground, though it was not the floating islands she had left behind. This was different. The sky above churned in swirling hues of black and violet, and the air carried an electric charge that made her skin prickle. The land beneath her feet pulsed like a living thing, veins of iridescent energy crisscrossing its surface.
"You have chosen," the voice from the abyss echoed in her mind.
Luna clenched her fists. Her fingers tingled with a strange sensation, an unnatural power coursing through her veins. Looking down, she saw shadowy tendrils coiling around her arms, dissipating into the air like smoke.
"Where is Adrian?" she demanded, her voice stronger than before.
A ripple spread across the dark horizon, and suddenly, Adrian appeared. He was suspended in the air, his body still and lifeless. Shadows clung to him, tendrils wrapping around his limbs like a cocoon.
"He lingers between worlds," the voice intoned. "He is neither lost nor saved. The choice is no longer his—it is yours."
Luna stepped forward, her pulse pounding. "Then release him. I upheld my end of the bargain."
The air shifted, and the shadowy figure from before coalesced before her. It had no true form, only an outline of something vaguely human, swirling with endless darkness. "Your pact binds you now. His life may be restored, but a balance must be kept."
Luna narrowed her eyes. "What do you mean?"
The figure extended a hand. "To give life back, something must be taken in return. You may free him, but you must condemn another."
Her breath hitched. "Who?"
The shadows stirred. "A soul of your choosing. The abyss is indifferent to who it claims."
Luna felt the weight of the decision crush her. She had agreed to the pact without knowing its full consequences. Now, Adrian's life depended on another's death. Could she truly make that choice?
She turned to Adrian, his unconscious form bathed in darkness. His breathing was faint, but there.
"What will you do, Luna?" the abyss whispered.
Her hands trembled as the power inside her surged. She was no longer just herself—she was something more. Something terrifying.
And she had to decide.
