Chapter 4

I wake up to pitch-black darkness, unable to see my hand in front of my face. The air is thick with a nauseating stench of decay.

My body feels like a limp rag, and I try to move, but my brain is foggy and I can't muster any strength.

Silence surrounds me. I finally manage to gather some energy after what feels like an eternity.

As I struggle to sit up, my head clangs against an iron cage with a sound.

I collapse back down, curling up on my side in the cramped cage, my teeth chattering.

Even in my dazed state, I realize the horrifying truth - I've been kidnapped!

All I did was deliver a shipment, drop it off at the designated spot. How could this happen?

A chill runs through my body, but I'm relieved that I had the foresight to share my live location with my boyfriend.

Thinking of my boyfriend of five years, a fellow police academy graduate, my racing heart calms slightly.

What I didn't expect was to see him so soon - but not as I remembered him.

My once-handsome boyfriend now has a spiked iron collar around his neck, the chain held in Granger's hand.

"Well hello, beautiful! Your knight in shining armor has come to rescue you!" Granger sneers.

He yanks carelessly on the chain, driving the spikes into the delicate skin of Blackwood's neck.

Tiny beads of blood well up - painful, but not life-threatening. Blackwood braced himself on the ground with both hands, stubbornly refusing to collapse, letting out painful whimpers.

My heart ached beyond measure, tears streaming down uncontrollably.

"You... let him go, I'll do anything you want!"

I fell to my knees in the cramped cage, repeatedly banging my head against the bars until it was bloody and bruised.

"Our boss wouldn't dream of hurting you... after all, your goods are too valuable."

A skinny old fellow, thin as a beanpole, came over and grabbed my neck, caressing it slowly. The nauseating touch on my throat made me want to vomit.

"Zoran, survive!"

Blackwood suddenly shouted, his blood-stained hand grabbing the iron chain and slashing it across his neck.

Blood spurted out like a fountain, splattering onto the corner of my eye.

Through the bloody mist, I saw Blackwood collapse to the ground, his lips mumbling: "Run..."

The next second, he fell silent forever.

Granger, like a devil, haphazardly wiped the blood off his face and staggered towards me. The skinny man respectfully stepped aside.

I shamelessly fell to my knees with a thud.

Trembling, I clutched at his pant leg. "Please don't kill me, I have supplies. "He crouched down, gripped my chin, and smeared Blackwood's blood onto my lips.

"Well then... you'd better serve me well tonight!"

With that, he carried me up in his arms.
