Chapter 9

Early the next morning, I went to find her.

Looking at the large patches of blue and purple bruises on her neck, I struggled to suppress the growing bitterness in my heart.

"Weren't you supposed to be so strong-willed? Weren't you ready to die rather than submit when you first came here?"

She remained silent, just sitting on the room's only chair, fidgeting with her fingers.

"What happened? Did Granger's wealth and riches blind you?!"

"You're nothing but a vain woman!"

One sentence after another, I grew angrier as I spoke, until finally, I couldn't help but push her.

My voice was choked with tears.

I thought of Blackwood, I thought of the old lady...

Just as I was about to break down, she suddenly embraced me tightly.

I buried my face in her shoulder, sobbing uncontrollably.

Deep down, I knew she did it for me... but it pained me that she had ultimately been dragged into the quagmire.
