Yan Xiu sat in the hospital corridor, the sharp scent of disinfectant irritating his nose. Night Cat was still in the operating room. The doctor had said the gunshot wound to her shoulder wasn't life-threatening, but she had lost a lot of blood and needed to be monitored.
Lin Xia sat beside him, holding the USB drive Night Cat had given him. "Are you really going to look at it now?"
Yan Xiu nodded. "Night Cat said there are important clues on it. And..." He glanced toward the operating room. "I can't shake the feeling that she's hiding something."
Lin Xia inserted the USB drive into the laptop she had brought. The screen flickered a few times, then displayed a complex password interface.
"Quantum encryption," Yan Xiu frowned. "Even more complicated than before."
Just then, Zhang Hao hurried over. "How is she?"
Lin Xia briefly explained the situation. Zhang Hao looked at the computer screen, his expression turning grim. "This encryption system... I think I've seen it before."
Yan Xiu looked up sharply. "Where?"
Zhang Hao recalled, "About five years ago, I was part of a special operation targeting high-tech crimes. We seized a batch of illegal equipment, including a similar encryption system."
"Where are those devices now?" Yan Xiu asked urgently.
"In the police evidence warehouse," Zhang Hao said. "But..."
"But what?"
Zhang Hao lowered his voice. "Not long after that operation, the officer in charge of those devices died in an accident. The case was never solved."
Yan Xiu and Lin Xia exchanged a look, both seeing the shock in each other's eyes.
"Take me to the evidence warehouse," Yan Xiu said. "Maybe we can find clues to crack this encryption system."
The police evidence warehouse was eerie and silent late at night. Zhang Hao used his access card to open the door, and the three of them walked into the dimly lit corridor.
"Those devices are in Zone B," Zhang Hao said. "But..."
He suddenly stopped. There were faint footsteps coming from the end of the corridor.
"Someone's here!" Lin Xia whispered.
Yan Xiu signaled for everyone to hide behind a nearby shelf. A man in a police uniform walked past, carrying a black case.
"That's..." Zhang Hao squinted. "Section Chief Liu from the evidence department."
Section Chief Liu looked around cautiously, then quickly opened a storage locker and placed the case inside.
After he left, the three of them quietly approached the locker.
"This is against protocol," Lin Xia said. "Evidence shouldn't be stored like this."
Yan Xiu had already opened the locker. Inside, besides the black case, there were stacks of files and several USB drives.
"These are..." Zhang Hao picked up a file, his face paling. "These are the original documents from that case five years ago!"
Yan Xiu quickly scanned the files and suddenly found a photo. It showed a laboratory with several people in white coats operating a massive machine. One of the figures made his heart skip a beat—it was his father!
"This machine," Yan Xiu pointed at the photo, "is the prototype of the quantum computer."
Lin Xia leaned in to look. "But why was it classified as illegal equipment?"
"Because," a cold voice came from behind them, "it was used for illegal experiments."
The three of them turned sharply to see Section Chief Liu pointing a gun at them.
"Section Chief Liu," Zhang Hao tried to defuse the situation, "this is a misunderstanding..."
"Shut up!" Liu's voice trembled. "You shouldn't have come here. You shouldn't have seen this."
Yan Xiu noticed Liu's flickering gaze and the slight tremor in his hand holding the gun. He suddenly understood something.
"You're not doing this willingly," Yan Xiu said. "They're threatening you, aren't they?"
Liu's expression crumbled. "You don't understand... They're everywhere..."
Just then, an explosion sounded outside. The entire warehouse shook violently.
"Run!" Yan Xiu shouted.
They barely made it out before the warehouse collapsed behind them. Liu was thrown to the ground by the blast, his gun falling from his hand.
Yan Xiu helped him up. "What's going on?"
Liu pointed shakily at the distant flames. "They... They're destroying the evidence..."
Lin Xia immediately called for backup on her radio. Zhang Hao kept watch, scanning their surroundings.
Yan Xiu noticed a USB drive sticking out of Liu's pocket. He discreetly took it and slipped it into his own pocket.
Sirens wailed as fire trucks and police cars arrived. The scene was chaos.
Amid the confusion, Yan Xiu inserted the USB drive into his laptop. The screen displayed a string of code—the key to cracking the quantum encryption system.
"I found it!" he said excitedly.
But then the screen flickered. A warning popped up: "Alert: Unauthorized access detected. System will self-destruct in 60 seconds."
Yan Xiu's fingers flew across the keyboard as he tried to stop the self-destruct sequence. Sweat dripped from his forehead, and he could hear his own heartbeat.
"Need help?" Night Cat's weak voice came from behind.
Yan Xiu turned in surprise to see her in a wheelchair, pale but determined.
"How did you..."
"Save it," Night Cat interrupted. "Give me the computer."
She took the laptop and quickly entered a string of complex code. The countdown stopped at 3 seconds.
"How did you do that?" Yan Xiu asked, stunned.
Night Cat smiled weakly. "Because my father was the one who designed this system."
The chaos at the warehouse had left everyone on edge. Yan Xiu sat in a makeshift command center set up near the scene, staring at the laptop screen. The code Night Cat had entered was still displayed, a testament to her quick thinking and expertise.
Lin Xia approached, holding two cups of coffee. "Here. You look like you need this."
Yan Xiu took the cup gratefully. "Thanks. Any updates on Night Cat?"
"She's stable," Lin Xia said. "The doctors say she'll make a full recovery, but she needs rest."
Yan Xiu nodded, his mind still racing. The USB drive had revealed more than just a key to the encryption system—it contained fragments of data that hinted at a much larger conspiracy.
"Did you find anything else on the drive?" Lin Xia asked, sitting down beside him.
Yan Xiu pulled up a series of files on the screen. "These are logs from the quantum computer prototype. It looks like my father was working on something far more advanced than anyone realized."
Lin Xia frowned. "What do you mean?"
Yan Xiu pointed to a line of code. "This isn't just an algorithm. It's a neural network—a system designed to mimic human thought processes. But it's not just mimicking... it's enhancing them."
Lin Xia's eyes widened. "You mean... it could make someone smarter?"
"Not just smarter," Yan Xiu said. "It could give someone complete control over their own mind—and potentially, the minds of others."
Lin Xia leaned back, processing the information. "That's... terrifying. But why would your father work on something like that?"
Yan Xiu sighed. "I don't know. But I think Night Cat might have some answers."
Just then, Zhang Hao entered the room, his face grim. "We've identified the source of the explosion. It was a controlled demolition—someone wanted to destroy that warehouse."
"Any leads on who?" Lin Xia asked.
Zhang Hao shook his head. "Not yet. But we're reviewing security footage from the area. If we're lucky, we might catch a glimpse of whoever planted the charges."
Yan Xiu stood up. "We need to talk to Night Cat. She's the only one who might know what's really going on."
Night Cat was resting in a private room, her shoulder bandaged and her face pale. She opened her eyes as Yan Xiu and Lin Xia entered.
"You're awake," Yan Xiu said, relief evident in his voice.
Night Cat smiled weakly. "Barely. What did I miss?"
Yan Xiu pulled up a chair beside her bed. "We found the USB drive. It had a quantum encryption system, but you managed to stop the self-destruct sequence. How did you know how to do that?"
Night Cat's smile faded. "Because my father designed that system. He was part of the same project as your father."
Yan Xiu's eyes widened. "What project?"
Night Cat took a deep breath, wincing at the pain. "Twenty years ago, our fathers were working on a secret government project. It was supposed to be a breakthrough in quantum computing, but they discovered something far more dangerous."
Lin Xia leaned forward. "What did they discover?"
Night Cat hesitated, then said, "They found a way to merge human consciousness with artificial intelligence. The quantum computer wasn't just a machine—it was a gateway to a new kind of existence."
Yan Xiu's mind raced. "But why was it shut down? Why was my father's work classified as illegal?"
Night Cat's expression darkened. "Because the government realized the potential for abuse. If someone could control that technology, they could control the minds of everyone connected to it."
Lin Xia's face paled. "That's... insane. But why would your father and Yan Xiu's father continue working on it?"
Night Cat looked at Yan Xiu. "Because they believed it could be used for good. They thought they could create a system that would enhance human intelligence without compromising free will. But someone else had other plans."
Yan Xiu clenched his fists. "Who?"
Night Cat shook her head. "I don't know. But whoever it is, they've been working in the shadows for years. They've infiltrated every level of government and law enforcement. That's why my father disappeared—and why yours had to fake his death."
Yan Xiu felt a chill run down his spine. "So my father's suicide... it was a cover?"
Night Cat nodded. "He knew they were coming for him. He left behind clues for you to find, hoping you could finish what he started."
Lin Xia looked at Yan Xiu. "What do we do now?"
Yan Xiu stood up, determination in his eyes. "We find out who's behind this. And we stop them before it's too late."
The next few days were a blur of activity. Yan Xiu, Lin Xia, and Zhang Hao worked tirelessly to piece together the fragments of information they had. The USB drive contained not only the encryption key but also coordinates to a hidden facility deep underground.
"This has to be where they're keeping the quantum computer," Yan Xiu said, pointing to a map on the screen.
Lin Xia frowned. "But how do we get in? If they've been operating in secret for this long, they'll have security measures we can't even imagine."
Yan Xiu smiled grimly. "That's where Night Cat comes in. She's the only one who knows how to bypass their systems."
Night Cat, still recovering from her injuries, was brought into the command center. She studied the map for a moment, then nodded. "I can get us in. But it won't be easy."
Zhang Hao crossed his arms. "What's the plan?"
Night Cat explained, "The facility is protected by a series of quantum locks. Only someone with the right code can disable them. I have that code, but we'll need to move quickly. Once we're inside, we'll have to locate the main control room and shut down the system before they realize we're there."
Lin Xia looked at Yan Xiu. "Are you sure about this? If we're wrong..."
Yan Xiu met her gaze. "We're not wrong. This is what my father wanted me to do. And I'm not going to let him down."
The team prepared for the mission, gathering equipment and reviewing the plan. As they suited up, Night Cat pulled Yan Xiu aside.
"There's something you need to know," she said quietly. "If we succeed, it could change everything. But if we fail..."
Yan Xiu placed a hand on her shoulder. "We won't fail. Not as long as we're together."
Night Cat smiled faintly. "Your father would be proud of you."
Yan Xiu felt a lump in his throat. "I hope so."
The journey to the hidden facility was tense. They moved through the underground tunnels, guided by Night Cat's knowledge of the system. The air grew colder as they descended deeper, the walls lined with strange, pulsating lights.
"This is it," Night Cat said as they reached a massive metal door. "The entrance to the facility."
Yan Xiu stepped forward, entering the code Night Cat had provided. The door hissed open, revealing a vast chamber filled with humming machinery.
"Stay close," Zhang Hao whispered, his weapon at the ready.
They moved through the facility, avoiding patrols and disabling security systems as they went. Finally, they reached the main control room.
"This is it," Yan Xiu said, his heart pounding. "The heart of the system."
Night Cat quickly began typing on the console, her fingers flying across the keys. "I'm in. I can shut it down, but it's going to take a few minutes."
Lin Xia kept watch at the door. "Hurry. We don't have much time."
Suddenly, alarms blared. Red lights flashed, and the sound of footsteps echoed through the corridor.
"They've found us!" Zhang Hao shouted.
Yan Xiu drew his weapon. "Hold them off! We need more time!"
The team fought valiantly, but the enemy was relentless. Just as it seemed they would be overwhelmed, Night Cat shouted, "Done! The system's shutting down!"
The machinery around them whirred to a halt, the lights flickering and then going out. The facility was plunged into darkness.
"We need to get out of here!" Lin Xia said, helping Night Cat to her feet.
They ran through the tunnels, the facility collapsing around them. As they emerged into the night air, the ground shook with a final, massive explosion.
Yan Xiu looked back at the ruins, his heart heavy but hopeful. "It's over."
Lin Xia placed a hand on his shoulder. "For now. But we'll be ready if they come back."
Yan Xiu nodded, a determined glint in his eyes. "We'll be ready."
