Chapter 11: Shadow Pursuit

Yan Xiu stood in the command center of the special task force, his eyes fixed on the wall of monitors that flickered with streams of data. Ever since receiving that mysterious text message, he had been tirelessly tracking the movements of "Q."

"Any leads?" Lin Xia pushed open the door, her abdomen no longer bandaged but her movements still stiff.

Yan Xiu pointed to a red dot on the screen. "Q has been unusually active on the dark web recently. It seems he's searching for some kind of quantum chip."

Nightcat, maneuvering his wheelchair closer, chimed in, "That chip... I feel like I've seen it somewhere before."

Just then, an alarm blared through the room. Zhang Hao burst in, urgency etched across his face. "We've received intel that a batch of illegal weapons is being traded at the docks, and it might include quantum chips."

Yan Xiu immediately stood up. "We need to check it out."

"It's too dangerous," Lin Xia objected. "We should wait for backup."

"There's no time," Yan Xiu insisted. "If Q gets his hands on that chip, the consequences will be unimaginable."

Under the cover of night, the docks were eerily silent. The four of them hid behind a stack of shipping containers, observing the scene of the exchange in the distance.

"At least twenty men," Zhang Hao whispered. "All armed."

Yan Xiu adjusted his specialized night-vision goggles. "I see the chip. It's in that silver case."

Suddenly, a gunshot shattered the silence. For reasons unknown, the two parties involved in the exchange had turned on each other, and chaos erupted.

"Now!" Yan Xiu shouted.

The team sprang into action. Zhang Hao and Lin Xia drew fire, while Yan Xiu and Nightcat made their way toward the chip.

Yan Xiu moved swiftly between the containers, dodging bullets that whizzed past him. He could hear his own heartbeat, feel the adrenaline coursing through his veins.

Just as he was about to reach the silver case, a towering figure blocked his path.

"This ends here," the man growled, raising an electrified baton.

Yan Xiu quickly assessed the situation. The man was massive but somewhat clumsy. Feinting to the left, Yan Xiu slid to the right, attempting to slip past him.

But the man anticipated the move, bringing the baton down with brutal force. Yan Xiu barely dodged it, though the baton grazed his shoulder, sending a jolt of pain through his body.

At that moment, Nightcat's voice crackled through the earpiece. "Yan Xiu, be careful! He's got mechanical enhancements!"

Sure enough, the man tore open his shirt, revealing a metallic chest plate that gleamed under the moonlight. His movements became unnaturally swift, and the baton whistled through the air as it swung toward Yan Xiu.

Yan Xiu rolled out of the way, but the man was too fast. Just as the baton was about to connect, a gunshot rang out.

The man staggered, a bullet hole now visible in his mechanical chest. Lin Xia had provided cover from a distance.

Seizing the opportunity, Yan Xiu swept the man's legs out from under him. But the man quickly rose again, the mechanical components in his chest humming ominously.

"Damn it," Yan Xiu cursed under his breath. "This thing can self-repair!"

He racked his brain for a solution. Then, he remembered what Nightcat had mentioned earlier about the quantum chip's properties.

"Nightcat," he said into the earpiece, "if I can insert the chip into his mechanical system, what would happen?"

Nightcat's voice was tinged with surprise. "In theory, it would cause quantum instability, leading to a system failure. But—"

"No buts," Yan Xiu interrupted, dodging another attack and grabbing the silver case from the ground.

He quickly opened the case and retrieved the chip. It was a crystal no larger than a thumb, glowing with an eerie light under the moon.

The man seemed to realize Yan Xiu's intent and attacked with renewed ferocity. Yan Xiu's arm was grazed by the baton, instantly going numb.

At that critical moment, Zhang Hao charged from the side, slamming into the man and knocking him off balance.

"Now!" Zhang Hao shouted.

Yan Xiu seized the chance, darting forward and inserting the chip into the man's chest port.

The mechanical components emitted a high-pitched whine as the man collapsed to his knees, writhing in agony. His mechanical parts twitched uncontrollably before finally smoking and shutting down.

"Nice work!" Lin Xia ran over, relief evident in her voice.

But Yan Xiu's expression remained grim. "This is just the beginning. Q won't give up so easily."

At that moment, Nightcat's voice came through the earpiece again. "Yan Xiu, I've discovered Q's real objective. He doesn't want the chip; he's after—"

Suddenly, the communication cut out.

"Nightcat? Nightcat!" Yan Xiu shouted, panic rising in his voice.

In the distance, an explosion rocked the night, and a plume of smoke rose from the direction of the command center.

"Oh no!" Zhang Hao's face paled. "We've been played!"
