The Unseen Strings

Jae Ahn sat in silence, gripping his phone tightly. The voice on the other end still echoed in his mind—low, menacing, and far too knowing.

"You sure don't want the people around you to move away from you."

His chest tightened as he slowly turned his gaze toward Do Hwan and Jongsuk. Both of them were staring at him, waiting for an explanation. But what was he supposed to say? That someone was watching them? That their every move was being controlled like pieces on a chessboard?

Jongsuk furrowed his brows. "Who was that?"

Jae Ahn swallowed the lump in his throat. "Nothing important," he muttered, slipping the phone into his pocket. But his hands were trembling slightly—just enough for Do Hwan to notice.

Do Hwan narrowed his eyes. "You're a terrible liar, you know that?"

Before Jae Ahn could respond, a deep voice cut through the tension.

"You really haven't changed, Jae Ahn."

The three of them turned to see a tall, well-dressed man standing at the entrance of the shop. His sharp gaze locked onto Jae Ahn, a smirk playing on his lips.

It was Park Yeong-chul.

Jongsuk stiffened immediately, his fingers curling into fists. Do Hwan's expression darkened. Jae Ahn, however, remained eerily still.

"What are you doing here?" Jae Ahn's voice was calm, but his eyes burned with quiet fury.

Park Yeong-chul took a slow step forward. "Is that any way to greet someone who knows your deepest secrets?" His gaze flickered toward the shopkeeper. "I see you're looking into the bracelet. Interesting choice."

Do Hwan was the first to react. "Do you know something about it?"

Yeong-chul chuckled, tilting his head. "I know more than you'd like me to."

Jongsuk's patience snapped. "Enough with the riddles! Just tell us what you know."

Yeong-chul didn't answer immediately. Instead, he reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a worn envelope, tossing it onto the counter. "This is for you, Jae Ahn."

Jae Ahn hesitated for a split second before picking up the envelope. As he unfolded the paper inside, his breath hitched.

A photo.

A bloodstained bracelet lying on the ground.

And in the corner of the image—his own initials carved into the wall.

Jae Ahn's entire body went cold.

Yeong-chul leaned in, whispering just loud enough for only Jae Ahn to hear: "You think you're chasing the truth, but what if the truth has been chasing you all along?"

At that moment, Jae Ahn felt it.

The weight of something much larger than he could comprehend.

Something dangerous.

Something that could destroy them all.

--- As Jae Ahn stepped out of the lab, his phone buzzed in his pocket. The name on the screen made his breath hitch—Park Yeong-ho.

He hesitated for a moment before answering.

The voice on the other end was eerily calm. "Why do you think your brother died?"

Jae Ahn's grip on the phone tightened. "What do you mean?"

A low chuckle. "You've been looking for answers in the wrong places, Jae Ahn. Maybe it's time you start asking the right questions."

The line went dead.

Jae Ahn stood frozen, his face unreadable. His mind raced with a thousand thoughts, but one thing was certain—this wasn't just about his brother anymore.

As he turned back, Do Hwan and Jongsuk were staring at him, waiting for an answer.

But instead of speaking, a small, unreadable smile formed on Jae Ahn's lips.

A smile that sent a chilling unease through both of them.

Jaeahn's voice echoed in their heads—You have to know about Yeong Chul too. It's definitely involved in some way.

With their suspicions growing, the three decided to take a risk. One of them would distract Yeong Chul while the other two searched his house. Jaeahn volunteered to be the bait, approaching Yeong Chul with a casual smile as if nothing was wrong. Meanwhile, Do Hwan and Jongsuk snuck into Yeong Chul's room, their hearts pounding in sync with each creak of the wooden floor.

But what they found inside made their blood run cold.

A secret room.

Walls covered in photographs—of them. Pages filled with notes about their lives. Some pictures dated back to when they were children. Every moment, every detail, documented with eerie precision.

We've been watched this whole time...

Snapping back to reality, they hurriedly took pictures and sent them to Jaeahn, their fingers trembling over their phones. Get out of there. Now.

But the message never reached him in time.

Before Jaeahn could react, a shadow loomed behind him. A sharp prick at his neck—cold and swift. His body turned sluggish, his vision blurred. A sickening realization hit him. Drugged…

His knees buckled, and darkness swallowed him whole.

Minutes later, Jongsuk's phone rang. The caller ID flashed Jaeahn, but when he picked up—

"I warned you not to dig too deep," a slow, chilling voice spoke. "Now, you'll all rot."

Click.

The call ended

Jongsuk and Do Hwan sprinted to the location they knew, dread pooling in their stomachs. But by the time they arrived—

Yeong Chul was gone.

And so was Jaeahn.

Jongsuk and Do Hwan froze as the call disconnected, the eerie words still ringing in their ears.

"I told you not to go in so deep… Now, you'll have to rot."

Jongsuk's grip on his phone tightened. His breath was uneven, his mind racing. "No... This can't be happening."

Do Hwan wasted no time. He grabbed Jongsuk's wrist. "We need to go. Now."

They rushed to the location, their hearts pounding in sync with their hurried footsteps. But when they arrived, the house was eerily quiet. The only thing left behind was Jae Ahn's phone, its screen shattered, lying carelessly in the dustbin.

No sign of struggle. No Jae Ahn.

The realization hit them like a cold wave. They were too late.

Jongsuk clenched his fists. "Damn it! Where did he take him?"

Do Hwan scanned the surroundings, his jaw tightening. "That bastard planned this from the start."

Just then, Jongsuk's phone vibrated. A new message. Unknown number.

"Do you want to save him? Then come find him… if you can."

A single attachment.

Jongsuk tapped it with trembling fingers. The screen flickered before revealing a dark, blurry image—Jae Ahn, unconscious, tied to a chair, his face shadowed by dim light.

Jongsuk's blood ran cold.

Do Hwan took one glance at the photo and muttered under his breath, "We're being played."

But Jongsuk had already made up his mind. They were going to find Jae Ahn, no matter what it took.
