Lila's hands shook as she pressed the bloody cloth tighter against Kade's ribs. The old mill's damp air did nothing to stop the chill crawling up her spine. Rain dripped through the busted roof and puddled on the floorboards. Tala's warning about hunters and Jaxon coming hit her like a fist to the gut. Her kid kicked hard as a jolt kept her moving. Kade was fading while blood soaked through her makeshift bandage. His gray eyes flickered and stayed half-open while his breaths came rough and shallow. She cursed under her breath as tears stung her eyes. He'd fought hunters and clawed out of that river twice now. Here he was bleeding out in her lap, and she couldn't do much to fix it.
