The night embraced her like an old friend as Rene stepped forward. The world around her shifted—the walls of her room dissolved into a vast, endless sky, speckled with silver stars that pulsed like living hearts. The black dress she now wore shimmered subtly, as if woven from the very fabric of the night.
She wasn't afraid.
She had always felt at home in the darkness, but now, she understood why.
A pathway of obsidian stone stretched before her, leading toward a towering city that floated above a sea of swirling mist. The voice from before returned, smooth and steady. "Welcome to Nocturna, the city of the unseen."
Rene's heartbeat quickened. She had read stories about hidden worlds, but now she was in one. "Why am I here?" she asked, her voice steady despite the thrill coursing through her veins.
A shadowy figure emerged ahead, draped in a cloak darker than midnight itself. But instead of fear, Rene felt an odd sense of familiarity.
"You have always belonged here," the figure said. "You are one of us—a Keeper of the Veil."
Her mind spun. A Keeper of the Veil? That sounded like something out of a fantasy novel.
Seeing her confusion, the figure lifted a hand, and suddenly, memories that weren't hers flooded her mind—visions of herself walking these streets before, of commanding the shadows, of guarding something precious.
"You were taken from us long ago," the figure continued. "Hidden in the human world for your safety. But now, it is time for you to remember."
Rene looked down at her hands. A soft, black glow pulsed from her fingertips, and deep inside, something unlocked—an understanding, a power that had always been waiting.
Then the twist hit her.
She wasn't just any Keeper of the Veil.
She was the last one left.
And something dangerous was coming for her.
