Rene held Rena close, feeling the warmth of her baby sister's tiny body against her chest. The little girl had already dozed off again, her silver lashes fluttering as she breathed softly.
Adrian and Adriel stood beside her, silent but watchful. Their cold exteriors had melted for now, replaced by something softer.
Nyra crossed her arms, leaning against the doorway. "I take it you're staying?"
Rene didn't hesitate. "Of course I am."
Nyra gave a slow nod. "Good. Because Nocturna is watching you closely."
Rene frowned. "You think they'd still throw me out even after I passed the trial?"
Nyra's silver eyes darkened. "Not everyone believes trials prove anything. Some think you'll betray us again."
The words stung, but Rene swallowed the pain. "Then I'll prove them wrong."
Before Nyra could respond, a sudden crack echoed through the room.
Adrian and Adriel stiffened. The air grew cold.
Rene turned sharply—just in time to see a dark rift tear open in the shadows.
A whisper slithered through the air, low and haunting.
"The child does not belong."
A blast of cold energy shot from Adrian's palm, colliding with the rift before it could widen. Ice crept along the floor, freezing the darkness in place before it crumbled into nothingness.
Silence.
Rene's heart pounded. "What the hell was that?"
Adriel's silver eyes narrowed. "Something was watching us."
Nyra stepped forward, her face unreadable. "Or someone."
Rene tightened her grip on Rena, instincts screaming at her to protect her baby sister at all costs.
Adrian's voice was quiet but firm. "They weren't talking about you, Rene."
Rene froze.
Her gaze drifted to the sleeping child in her arms.
Rena.
"The child does not belong."
A chill ran down Rene's spine.
Something—or someone—was after her baby sister.
And she would burn down the world before she let them take her.
