「You're finally here!」
I looked at it with a pokerface. A Jinn was sitting on a chair, looking at me with a big smile!
Seriously, I just f*cking want to sleep!
Why the f*ck should I deal with these Jinns from left and right!?
I rolled up my eyes.
- ugh.
It widened its eyes.
「What was that!?」
- Seriously, let me just sleep! Did I ask you to come to my dream!? No. Did I want you to be in my dream!? No. Did I think about you being in my dream!? No! No, no no no no no no no! Why can't you guys leave me alone!?
I felt like a volcano bursting. I could clearly feel fire and smoke coming out of my head.
- I really hate you guys!
It frowned.
「What!? What did I even do!?」
No, it seriously wants me to burst out of anger!?
- What did you do!? You guys are the reason I'm switching dreams, aren't you? And I'm super tired of it. I can't even have a peaceful dream! All I do during the night is save other people's souls.
I didn't even notice when my voice cracked or when my tears started dropping from my eyes. All I could feel was the pain and tiredness in my soul.
- I really only want to sleep. I'm tired, and this tiredness is affecting my daily life! No matter what time of day it is, if I sleep, I only start switching to other people's dreams. I don't have my own dreams, and my mind doesn't relax during sleep since I have to use it to fight!
It smirked.
「And who said it's our doing?」
Are you kidding me? I couldn't hide my anger. I stomped my feet on the ground and walked toward it.
- Ha! Then who's doing it is!? Me? God? Satan?
It snickers.
「So, you still don't know who's doing it is!」
I slammed my hand on the back of the chair, leaned toward it, and widened my eyes.
- Then you tell me, whose doing is it?
「I don't know, but what makes you think it's our doing?」
- Because this hell started when I saw that f*cking dream! After that, and that f*cking fever. I... I...
Tears were dropping from my eyes. I didn't even know why I was crying! My soul was tired, and it was hurting so much that I didn't know how to express it. The room was dark and empty, except for the chair and the blankets I was sleeping with. My eyes spotted my diary that I was reading before falling asleep.
- pfft.
I let out a snicker and grabbed the diary.
- So you wanna know when it started!?
Those golden eyes, unsettlingly calm, watched me as if they held all the answers. I met their gaze and, with a surge of defiance, slammed the diary against its chest. A wave of golden hair lifted and swirled, momentarily obscuring its face, the only visible sign of the force I'd unleashed. Its hair continued to dance around its face, while its eyes were fixed on me. It... was ridiculously handsome...
My hand went numb, and the diary slipped away. In a swift motion, it snatched the diary and then caught me as I stumbled.
「What you want me to see in your diary!?」it smirked.
- See when it all started. See!? I had a f*cking dream about a Jinn telling me weird things, then a fever! And... and...
And!? I suddenly felt like reality slapped me. And what!? I didn't start switching dreams right after that! What happened next?
「And!?」
Its voice seemed amused. It...
Really pissed me off.
- And then, if I remember correctly, I had the same type of fever a week later! And then my bed collapsed all of a sudden...
Wait! How did my bed collapse again? Why... why do my memories keep slipping away, fading into nothingness? The more I tried to grasp them, the more they slipped through my fingers. A suffocating feeling twisted in my chest, and suddenly, I couldn't breathe. My heart pounded in my ears as the world around me began to blur, and I felt as if I was drowning in the chaos of my own mind.
- Ugh, I feel sick...
The room began to spin uncontrollably, each wall closing in around me, blurring and twisting like a nightmare I couldn't escape. My mind screamed for clarity, but all I could feel was a suffocating pressure in my chest, as if the air itself was turning against me. My legs trembled beneath me, unable to support the weight of the overwhelming darkness closing in. It was then, in that crushing moment of helplessness, that my body betrayed me, and I collapsed.
It caught me mid-air. It... pisses me off. I tried to push it away.
- Go away, you jerk.
I shout.
It smirked again.
「Ho!? You don't seem to be scared of me. I'm a Jinn, you know!?」
- Ha! Like what you're going to do? Huh?
「Hmm? You know...」
It chuckled like a wild animal watching its prey, eyes gleaming with untamed hunger.
「You know, there was a human girl just a year ago or so, got entangled with my kind, you know where is she!?」
It glared at me with a fury that sent a chill down my spine. It let a cackle out.
「She's half dead, in hospital. Her head was completely open, and her brain had been splattered outside.」
Its eyes were glowing, maybe out of excitement? I felt something in my stomach shaking, and I felt so nauseous that I wanted to cry.
- You disgusting piece of sh*t!
It grabbed my hand mid-air and laughed.
「Did you try to slap me? You're so brave! Are you really not afraid of me?」
- Heh, you're the most normal thing I've seen in my dreams.
It looked kinda confused.
「W-what?」
- Why are you shocked? I mostly deal with burnt humans and ugly Jinns. Actually, compared to them, you are quite handsome, you know.
I smirked and grabbed its chin. It looked quite shocked.
「Huh, is this something you'd say to any other men?」
The smile on my lips froze in an instant.
- Men? Man? Um... male? Are you... male?
It suddenly felt awkward. He looked into my eyes and giggled.
「What? You hate men or something?」
- N-n-n-no no no, um, it just suddenly felt awkward.
I put my hands on his chest and try to push him lightly.
「Do you... want to sleep?」
Huh? What gotten into him so suddenly?
- And you wanna do that for me?
He smiled.
「Of course」
- And you want me to trust you?
He smiled, and a bright beam of joy lit up his face.
「Of course」
... shall I strangle him? He really is pissing me off.
- That's... a big no! Let go of me.
I tried to free myself from his arms.
「Ok ok ok. If... if you can't trust me, a Jinn, then, what about a human?」
He brushed his blonde hair to the side, letting it fall effortlessly. His yellow eyes trembled ever so slightly.
- pfft. What? Like you know any human!
「Hey! I'm not here cause I want to! I was orde-」
「Hmm?」
His body tensed at the sound of the voice. I, too, looked in that direction, flabbergasted.
「Did you two make out when I was on my way or something?」
He laughed anxiously.
「Hahahaha, what are you talking about? Of course not!」
He gently let me sit on the floor.
「I just kept her company, as you requested. 」
The girl's smile was so fake that I could see that from 10 miles away.
「Great! Then why is she not sleeping?」
He was nervous.
「She... doesn't trust me」
The girl's smile faded, but soon, it was replaced by a smirk.
「Really? She's smart!」
- Um, sorry... but... who are you? Are you... a Jinn?
He suddenly moved like a chill runs down his spine. He covered my mouth with his hands.
「Ahahahahaha, don't mind her. She's stupid.」
I could feel the cold sweat trickling down his body. What's going on? Is he... afraid of her? A Jinn? And a male at that! Who is she to scare a Jinn? Suddenly, I was terrified of her, too!
She seemed caught in a delicate battle between serenity and chaos. As she attempted to calm herself, her long black hair unfurled like shadows dancing in the night, swirling softly around her. The white strands appeared almost ethereal, shimmering briefly before fading back into the darkness, creating an enchanting play of light and shadow.
But it was her eyes that held an unsettling power over me. They were an abyss of pitch-black, swallowing the surrounding light, yet within them flickered amber specks. The most disconcerting aspect was how those flecks shifted; one moment, they bloomed like blossoms in spring, only to shrink and twist into unfamiliar shapes the next. It left me questioning reality itself, making me wonder if I was witnessing a glimpse into another world—a place where darkness could breathe and light could morph.
「Did you... just called me a Jinn?」
Her hands were trembling in anger. It was like rage was swirling in her body.
Sh*t, I should do something about it.
- I'm- I'm sorry. I didn't mean any disrespect, I just...
「Sigh, never mind it. I came here to help you sleep, that's all.」
Huh!?
- Wh-what? Why?
「Huh? Why? Why not? I'm the guardian of worlds, so of course, after seeing an oddball like you, I have to do something to fix it!」
- Hahahahaha, but still...
「Sigh~ . Look, Aine, I don't know if you know this, but if you continue this way, your soul may get hurt. Your body and brain are breaking down right now, but it can also happen to your soul!」
I felt as though cold water was suddenly poured over me, as if the world around me had frozen in an instant. My body stiffened, and an overwhelming chill spread through me, yet my head burned with an intense heat. It was a strange, conflicting sensation—my skin felt like ice, while my thoughts swirled in a fiery haze. I felt helpless, as if I couldn't control either the freezing cold or the suffocating heat inside me, and my mind raced with confusion and fear.
- I...
My head started spinning.
- I need to sleep...
The boy Jinn grabbed my wrist and embarrassed me.
「Don't worry. I have been assigned to protect you. Just sleep, and don't worry. I promise to protect your astral body properly.」
He seemed genuine enough to make my weary mind go blank, the noise of the world fading into nothing. In that moment, the weight of everything lifted, and it felt like the world of dreams was softly reaching out to pull me away. His presence was like a moment of peace, a fleeting escape from the chaos that constantly swirled around me.
***
「I like her!」
He stood there, an unsettling grin stretching across his face, his eyes wide with a manic gleam that almost seemed to flicker in the light. His hand was pressed against his cheek, fingers trembling slightly as if they were trying to steady the wild excitement that radiated off him. There was something unhinged about his smile, a kind of joy that was almost too much, like it was barely contained, ready to spill over into something darker. His entire posture screamed exhilaration, but the way his hand gripped his face, half in awe, half in some strange form of control, made it clear that something wasn't quite right beneath that cheerful mask.
「Can I play with her a little longer?」
The girl was standing there, watching. Her black and amber eyes were shining in the darkness of the room.
「I assigned you to her to protect her. I don't give a damn about your games.」
He brushed his blonde hair with his hands.
「Ok thanks.」
「But...」
He suddenly looked at her terrifying smile. He couldn't comprehend what he had done wrong for her to be mad at him.
「Kairos, I heard you mentioned that piece of trash's situation to Aine.」
He flinched a little hard. Now he could see why she's so mad!
Kairos: 「haha, I'm sorr...」
He couldn't even finish his word before she grabbed his face and threw him across the room!
Kairos: 「I-I'm sorry.」
She grabbed his neck from behind and pressed his back with her foot.
「Look, Kairos. I'm a super duper merciful person! The fact that that trash is still alive is proof! But remember, it's also a warning to you and your friends. I may have spared him, but there's no second chance. If you hurt Aine, I'll kill you on the spot. Understand?」
He was about to lose his breath.
Kairos: 「alright, alright, I'm sorry.」
「Great!」
She let him go and vanished into the shadows. He sank to the floor, eyes fixed on Aine's face. But even with the weight of the warning hanging in the air, a twisted grin spread across his face, one that he couldn't suppress, no matter how hard he tried.
