Fate's Uncertainty

In love once again, I naturally felt refreshed both inside and out. After returning to school, I took out all my long-accumulated dirty laundry and cleaned them thoroughly. My three roommates were shocked when they saw me. Bao Long asked, "Why is the sun rising from the west? What's going on with you?"

I spat. "You filthy bastards, I can't even be bothered with you guys."

I gave Bao Long and the others a scornful look, flipping them off. While washing my clothes in the laundry room, I thought about Dong Shanshan's cute face and couldn't help but smile. As I scrubbed, I hummed "The Boatman's Love."

Coincidentally, in the stall next to me, Taozi was in the restroom. He probably hadn't seen me so happy since we started university. He shouted, "Damn, Fei, what's wrong with you? Did your head get hit by a doorframe? You're making it hard for me to shit!"

I spat. "You worthless bastards, I disdain you all."

After finishing the laundry, I rushed back to the dorm, lay down on my bed, and called Dong Shanshan to ask if she had eaten, if she had missed me. In the room, Wang Cheng, Li Xiaoqiang, and Bao Jinlong were eyeing me, watching adult videos. When they heard my tone over the phone, Li Xiaoqiang cursed, "Xiaofei, you're in heat, huh?"

I spat. "You dirty perverts, I'm ignoring you."

It was another Saturday, and since confirming my relationship with Dong Shanshan, this was the first time I was going to see her. Sitting on the bus, with my scarf clean and fresh, I watched couples walking hand in hand outside the window. My heart was full of sweetness. It was hard to imagine that just a week ago, I was cursing at them for being shameless.

As they say, when you're happy, your spirits rise. Even when I woke up in the morning to wash my face and shave, I thought I looked much more handsome in the mirror.

I was flipping through a boring and pretentious romance novel on the bus, and thought I should describe my current self with a quote from the book.

"Sunlight poured through the window, its rays shining on the face of the boy who once had eyes full of confusion. The boy opened the window, and a gentle breeze moved his soft blue hair. The boy looked up at the sky at a 45-degree angle. The sunlight captured his smile at that moment."

Ha ha! That's it, that's the one! You know, sometimes people can't get too carried away, even I know that my current expression is quite shameless. So, after reading this, a smile will do.

Speaking of Dong Shanshan, back in high school, I really underestimated her. Now I realize that not only is she good at KOF, but she also has a very kind heart. She spoils me a lot and tolerates many of my bad habits, but there are two things I need to do. One is to be good to her, and the other is not to act like a thug and get into fights. She particularly hates the second one.

The first one, of course, is easy for me. It's the most basic thing. And the second one, I can definitely do. I never liked fighting much, except when I first started university and got into a few fights. Other than that, I've been a pretty good guy.

Since I was worried about leaving the female ghost in the dorm room and causing trouble, I decided to carry her with me. Now, all I had to do was wait for the 15th. I kept thinking about it when the bus arrived. When I got off, I immediately saw Dong Shanshan, who had been waiting for me at the school gate. I smiled and ran over to her, giving her a hug and saying, "Why are you out here so early? It's so cold."

She smiled, despite her red cheeks from the cold. "It's not cold, and I haven't been out for long."

I held her hand and asked, "So, what's the plan today? Want to go to Sun Island and see the snow sculptures?"

She smiled and said, "No need, my brother wants to meet you."

Her brother? She has a brother here? I asked, "Isn't it just you at home? Is it a cousin?"

She nodded and flagged down a taxi. On the way, she said, "It's my uncle's son, my big brother. He's been really good to me since I was little, and he works in Harbin now. Yesterday, I sent him a text and told him about us. He insisted on treating us to a meal. Hehe, you're not going to turn him down, right?"

I smiled and said, "How could I refuse the lady's request? If it's a royal decree, I must obey. From now on, I'll let you call the shots. You point east, and I won't go west. No worries, sister, we're family now. Go ahead, make the decisions!"

As I said that, I gently tapped her nose. She pretended to frown but ended up laughing.

Before long, we arrived at a residential building in Daoli District. Dong Shanshan led me up to the fifth floor and knocked on the door. After a moment, the door opened, and a tall, handsome man greeted us with a big smile. The man was in his thirties, and honestly, his looks made me feel a little self-conscious. He had a high nose bridge and a face with clear sculpted features, almost like a European sculpture.

When we entered the house, I put on a big smile and greeted him, "Hey, bro, how's it going?" I secretly thought, this guy's either a model or a gigolo.

Luckily, this guy was very easygoing, and it was clear he really cared for Dong Shanshan. He told me not to be shy and to treat the place like my own home. I smiled and nodded.

It was already noon, and Dong Shanshan's brother had cooked lunch, inviting us to eat while we watched TV. We sat down at the table. There was a spread of dishes, and he brought out six bottles of beer. This guy seemed to be quite a generous type.

A man's communication always revolves around two things: the drinking table and the battlefield. This saying is truly wise.

After a few rounds of drinking, we started to open up. Despite his handsome looks, I had to admit, his alcohol tolerance wasn't that great. With his small tolerance, I managed to outdrink him easily.

Though his tolerance was low, he still insisted on drinking more. After downing three bottles, he started to get a bit tipsy. When the alcohol in the house ran out, he insisted on drinking more, saying it was a special occasion, and he had to drink well.

Dong Shanshan glared at me, blaming me for getting her brother drunk. I felt wronged—I'd barely taken a sip when he was already halfway to being drunk.

Luckily, her brother wasn't in a relationship and lived alone, so there wouldn't be any major issues. Since he was so happy today, Dong Shanshan asked me to stay with him while she went downstairs to buy more alcohol.

After she left, I chatted with her brother. Once he had a few more drinks, he couldn't stop talking, and he started discussing various topics with me.

When men drink, they can never avoid the topic of women. Yes, on the drinking table, the topic of women is always unavoidable.

As we talked, we inevitably got onto the subject of women. He patted me on the shoulder and said, "Kid, don't think I'm still a single man now. Actually, I don't want to find anyone. You see, when I was in college, I had my fair share of fun."

I nodded in agreement, believing him. Good-looking guys are never short of women. Women, by nature, have no resistance to handsome guys.

Seeing me nod, he lit a cigarette, took a deep puff, and continued boasting, "Back in college, I had it all. The most impressive thing was, two girls fought over me."

I thought to myself, "You really don't need to provoke me like this." I knew this man had poor character, and his arrogance was obvious. I casually asked, "Two girls fought over you? What happened next?"

He suddenly went silent, puffing on his cigarette. Then, with a smug expression, he said, "One got disabled, the other died."

His words hit me like a punch to the gut. I glanced at the down jacket hanging in the living room. Could it be a coincidence?

After a moment, he seemed to snap out of it and said, "Don't think I'm joking, kid. I, Dong Sizhe, have had women around me for over thirty years. But this time, I definitely went too far. I didn't like either of them, but when one girl crippled the other, I realized things had gone too far. In a fit of anger, I cursed her out."

I couldn't listen anymore. I suddenly remembered the tears shed by the female ghost. The most devoted women in the world are nothing compared to this. But they were just victims of this bastard's emotional game.

I fell silent, feeling a wave of sadness. How could human emotions be so ugly?

Dong Sizhe, seeing me silent, laughed and patted my shoulder, saying, "Kid, don't think I'm a bad person. You need to understand something—before marriage, women are just accessories. Understand? I didn't force them to hurt each other. Actually, it worked out. After one of them got crippled, I was free to live as I pleased. By the way, do you want to know what happened to the other one after I cursed her out? You'll never guess."

I couldn't take any more of his nonsense. I didn't care if he was joking or not. I didn't care who his family was. Two women's lives were destroyed, and now he was bragging about it like it was a prize. I thought, who will pay for their foolishness? And who will pay for their devotion?

I lowered my head and asked him, "The other one jumped, didn't she?"

Dong Sizhe laughed heartily. "Haha, you guessed it... ah!!"

His scream came just as I grabbed a bottle from the table and smashed it against his head.

The dead, the disabled—who will pay for them? I will! Maybe the law can't punish you, but I can!!!
