Chapter 7: The Weight of Goodbye

The sky was clear, the air crisp with the scent of blooming plum blossoms as Mei stood before the ancient cherry tree. Its branches arched above her, heavy with petals that fluttered down like pink snow, carpeting the earth in delicate layers. The river flowed quietly beside her, its surface shimmering beneath the morning light.

She reached into her pocket, fingers curling around the folded paper crane she had made the night before. It was small, its wings delicate, creased with careful precision. Just like the ones she used to make as a child, back when she believed in wishes and promises.

Mei knelt beneath the tree, setting the crane among the fallen petals. Her fingers lingered on its paper wings, her voice barely a whisper. "For you, Jun. For the wishes we made… and the ones that couldn't come true."

The breeze stirred, ruffling the petals, lifting the paper crane ever so slightly before it settled again. Mei watched, her heart heavy and full all at once.

She remembered everything now—the laughter they had shared, the adventures along the riverbank, the secret promises beneath the cherry blossoms. And she remembered the accident, the way her world had shattered as she watched him fall, helpless and afraid. She remembered her parents' faces, their fear, their desperation as they took her away, hoping distance would heal what was broken.

But forgetting hadn't healed anything. It had only left her hollow, incomplete.

She looked up at the tree, her gaze tracing the branches as they swayed against the blue sky. It was here that she had made her promise to Jun, a vow sealed beneath the falling petals. "We'll always be friends. We'll always be here."

A tear slipped down her cheek, warm against her cold skin. She smiled, bittersweet and fragile. "I kept my promise, Jun. I came back. I remembered." Her voice wavered, the words catching in her throat. "And now… I have to let you go."

The breeze picked up, swirling around her, lifting the petals into a spiral of pink and white. Mei closed her eyes, the wind brushing her cheeks, soft as a whisper.

"I'll always be with you."

Her heart squeezed, a warmth spreading through her chest. It was faint, like the memory of a touch, the echo of a laugh. But it was real. And it was enough.

Mei opened her eyes, watching as the petals danced across the river, carried away by the current. The paper crane lifted, its wings catching the breeze, tumbling gently before landing on the water's surface. It floated, drifting downstream, spinning slowly as the river embraced it.

She watched until it disappeared around the bend, her tears falling silently, her heart aching as she whispered, "Goodbye, Jun."

The cherry blossoms continued to fall, blanketing the earth, filling the air with the scent of spring. Mei stood beneath the tree, her head tilted back, her face bathed in sunlight.

It felt like Jun was smiling with her, his presence wrapped around her, warm and safe. She knew he was finally at peace, his spirit free to soar with the petals, his memory forever alive in her heart.

And she was free, too. Free to remember, to grieve, and to live.

With one last look at the ancient cherry tree, Mei turned away, her steps light as she walked down the path, leaving Moon Bridge behind. The sky stretched endlessly above her, the horizon bright and wide, filled with new beginnings.

She was ready to face them, carrying Jun's memory with her, a promise kept, a love never forgotten.
