When I awoke, Caelan was by my side.
He joyfully took my hand and asked, "Indra, how are you feeling?"
"Is your head still spinning? You have a mild concussion. We need to keep you under observation for a bit before you can leave."
"Don't worry, I'll stay with you..."
I looked straight into his eyes and asked, "Who is Nolan?"
He froze for a moment, then lowered his gaze. "She's... a college classmate."
"A college classmate?"
Caelan explained, "Yeah, she went abroad before you transferred to our class."
"Indra, please don't overthink this. There's really nothing between us. Nolan has a heart condition, that's why I..."
His voice trailed off. I glanced at his hand; the silver band had been removed, leaving only a faint mark.
I murmured a soft "Mm-hmm" and closed my eyes. "I want to rest now."
Caelan hesitated for a moment before saying softly, "Alright, you get some sleep. I'll come back later to take you home."
Shortly after he left, to my surprise, Nolan showed up.
She stood by my bedside, looking as adorable as a porcelain doll.
She apologized gently, "I'm so sorry, Indra. It's all my fault you got hurt."
"Caelan wanted to save you then, but I held him back.I softly chuckled, "If he doesn't want to stay, you can't force him to."
Nolan pressed her lips together, "Indra, please don't misunderstand. Caelan and I have known each other for a long time, that's why he's more attentive to me."
"But we're just friends now. He's only concerned about my health."
After Nolan left, I contacted a college classmate.
I asked her if she knew anything about Nolan.
"Nolan? I remember her. She had a heart condition and went abroad for surgery in her freshman year."
"She just returned to the country recently. I even added her as a friend."
"What's up, Indra? Why are you suddenly asking about this?"
I vaguely replied, "I just heard she had some connection with Caelan."
"I see what's going on. You're jealous."
"Nolan and Caelan were pretty close before she went abroad, but later Caelan's attention was all on you."
"You two were the model couple in college. Don't overthink it! Besides, from Nolan's social media, it seems she's found a boyfriend too."
My heart skipped a beat.
My classmate sent me screenshots of Nolan's social media posts.
There were candid shots from shopping trips, candlelit dinners, and cotton candy at an amusement park. Each date corresponds to a day when Caelan said he had to work overtime.
The most recent entry is a photo.
In the picture, two hands are intertwined, with simple silver rings tightly connecting their ring fingers.
The caption reads: [You promised your ring finger would be reserved for me alone. Thank you for staying true, even if we can't kiss, we still love each other.]
Suddenly, I remember what Caelan said to me when I was designing Forever Promise.
"Indra, I love you so much, but I have to perform surgeries often, so I can't wear a ring all the time."
"Oh, what should I do? I can't always have my little Indra on me."
He whined while hugging my waist. I felt ticklish and chuckled, "Are you a child?"
"As long as two people love each other, you don't have to wear it all the time."
"But you designed this specially. I want to wear it always."
"How about I hang the ring around my neck? That way, it's like you're always living in my heart..."
I looked down at the ring on my hand, suddenly feeling ridiculous.
The person who said he wanted to keep me close to his heart was racking his brains to lie, all because he had already promised his ring finger to someone else long ago.
