Chapter Three: Shadows and Steel

Night fell once more over the city, and Lucius found himself navigating the labyrinth of the Forum, where whispers carried more weight than swords. Beneath the towering marble statues and sprawling columns, deals were made, alliances forged, and enemies decided.

Cassia met him beneath the shadow of the Temple of Jupiter, her dark cloak blending into the night. "You've made your move. Now you must be prepared for the counterstrike."

Lucius crossed his arms, his expression unreadable. "You speak as if you know something I do not."

She stepped closer, her voice barely above a whisper. "The Senate is watching you, but they are not the only ones. There are forces at play beyond politics."

He smirked, tilting his head. "You mean the assassins?"

Cassia's eyes flickered, betraying a moment of hesitation. "You are more exposed than you think, Lucius. Every shadow in Rome hides a blade."

Before he could respond, the sharp clang of steel rang through the alley. A hooded figure lunged from the darkness, dagger flashing in the dim torchlight.

Lucius reacted on instinct, sidestepping the attack and grabbing his assailant's wrist. With a brutal twist, the dagger clattered to the ground. Cassia moved just as swiftly, drawing a concealed blade and driving it into the attacker's side.

The figure gasped, staggering before crumpling to the ground. Lucius stepped forward, pulling back the hood to reveal a young man, barely past twenty, his lips trembling in the throes of death.

Cassia exhaled sharply. "They're getting desperate."

Lucius wiped his blade on the dead man's cloak. "Desperate men make mistakes."

Cassia's gaze lingered on the body before meeting his. "Then let us ensure we make none."

The night was far from over, and Rome's shadows held many more secrets yet to be unveiled.
