Chapter 35 The First Move

The evening was bathed in golden light as the academy's grand hall filled with the most distinguished guests of the elite circle. Dresses shimmered, suits were crisp, and conversations floated in the air like carefully measured chess moves.

Qingxue stood at the heart of it all, her silver-blue eyes calm, expression unreadable. She moved with effortless grace, neither seeking attention nor avoiding it—she was simply there, untouchable, unshakable.

Qiuhan remained close by, his cold gaze sweeping the room, noting every glance, every whisper. He was not one for idle chatter, nor did he care for the false smiles of their so-called peers. But he understood the importance of being present.

Li Shen was near, his golden eyes flickering toward Qingxue every so often, as if drawn to her without meaning to be. He was surrounded by admirers, but his attention was elsewhere, distant, reserved.

And Ruolan noticed everything.

She had spent years perfecting the art of patience, waiting for the right moment to strike. And tonight, she would make her first move.

Her lips curled into a practiced smile as she approached Li Shen, her steps deliberate, her presence carefully calculated.

"Li Shen," she greeted, her voice carrying just the right amount of warmth. "It's been a while."

He barely glanced at her, his response clipped. "Ruolan."

She didn't falter. Instead, she laughed softly, tilting her head. "Still as cold as ever. But that's what makes you so interesting."

He said nothing.

Ruolan's gaze shifted, lingering on Qingxue before returning to him. "I heard you grew up close to Qingxue," she mused. "I never realized you were so protective of her."

Li Shen's fingers tightened slightly around his glass.

"Or is it more than that?" she continued, feigning innocent curiosity. "Could it be that the untouchable Li Shen actually has a weakness?"

The air between them sharpened.

Li Shen's gaze flickered to her, golden and unreadable. "Careful, Ruolan," he said smoothly. "You're overstepping."

She laughed lightly, but inside, her mind was already spinning.

He didn't deny it.

Interesting.

Qingxue, who had been listening from a distance, finally turned her gaze toward them. Her silver-blue eyes met Ruolan's, and for a brief moment, an unspoken challenge passed between them.

Ruolan smiled sweetly, raising her glass in a silent toast.

This was only the beginning.
