Chapter 5 – The Echo in the Machine

Ethan didn't turn around.

He couldn't.

The footsteps stopped just behind him, the air suddenly too thick, pressing against his skin like static. His reflection had vanished, but something else was in the room.

The cursor on his laptop twitched. A new message appeared.

"DON'T LOOK. JUST LISTEN."

Ethan's throat was dry. The voice that had spoken before—his own voice—was silent now, waiting.

Then, soft breathing. Not his.

Right behind him.

A low, distorted whisper crackled through his speakers.

"You brought me here."

Ethan squeezed his eyes shut. "No, I—"

The whisper cut him off.

"You opened the file. You plugged in the drive. You let me in."

A cold breeze brushed his neck.

Ethan couldn't take it anymore. He lunged for his laptop, fingers flying over the keyboard, trying to shut down whatever was running.

His reflection reappeared in the screen.

But it wasn't mirroring him.

It was watching.

And then, it smiled.
