As soon as Ye Chu and Gu Muchen’s eyes met, she quickly moved closer to Xiao Sheng, trying to avoid Gu Muchen’s gaze.
“What’s wrong?” Xiao Sheng immediately noticed Ye Chu acting differently.
Ye Chu lowered her head and couldn’t say anything. She couldn’t tell Xiao Sheng that she had just run into someone she didn’t want to see, someone she was afraid of.
Xiao Sheng glanced at Gu Muchen, then spoke to Ye Chu. “It’s normal to feel uncomfortable the first time you come to this kind of event. I don’t know anyone here either. Let’s go take our seats.”
Ye Chu knew that Xiao Sheng was looking out for her. Even though she didn’t know much about Xiao Sheng’s true background, she understood that not just anyone could walk into today’s charity auction. Their seats were very close to the front, which subtly highlighted Xiao Sheng’s true status.
Gu Muchen hadn’t expected to see Ye Chu here.
He was surprised, and his gaze lingered on her longer than he expected.
Her Klein blue evening gown made her fair skin appear even more delicate, like a porcelain doll under the soft lights.
The dress’s streamlined design perfectly outlined her figure. Though she wore only a few accessories, each piece of jewelry was priceless, subtly enhancing her beauty.
Even Ye Shiyun was briefly stunned when she saw Ye Chu.
But when she noticed the unfamiliar man standing beside Ye Chu, her heart filled with disdain.
She had come to attend the charity auction today, and somehow, Ye Chu was here too.
However, the man she had brought was obviously a nobody. After so long, not a single person had come to greet them.
“Mu Chen, you know what kind of person Ye Chu is,” Ye Shiyun said softly. “She has never been willing to accept her identity as an illegitimate daughter. She has always wanted to marry into a wealthy family. She must be jealous that I came with you, so she found some man to bring her in.”
“Mu Chen, we should’ve been stricter with her. If she does anything embarrassing, please don’t be mad,” Ye Shiyun continued, her tone laced with mockery. Then, she wrapped her arms around Gu Muchen’s and said coquettishly, “Mu Chen, I’m tired. Let’s take our seats.”
Gu Muchen didn’t react, simply leading Ye Shiyun to their designated seats, which happened to be in the same row as Xiao Sheng and Ye Chu.
As more guests arrived, Bai Li and his companion took their seats next to Gu Muchen. Bai Li glanced at Ye Shiyun and teasingly said, “So, have you finally decided to make it public?”
Gu Muchen ignored Bai Li’s teasing.
He had no feelings for Ye Shiyun and had yet to promise anything to her. That night still felt suspicious to him—the security cameras had been conveniently turned off, and Ye Shiyun just happened to have a red birthmark on her waist.
“When did the Xiao family arrive in Yun City?” Gu Muchen suddenly asked.
“I don’t know. I haven’t heard anything,” Bai Li replied, glancing at Xiao Sheng, who was sitting nearby.
“But I did find out that the Xiao family was coming to attend this charity auction. Guess what else I found out?”
Gu Muchen’s gaze turned icy as he stared at Bai Li, who immediately backed down and said, “Xiao Sheng is the future heir of the Xiao family. Two years ago, he opened a small bar in Yun City.”
“The Shengge Bar,” Gu Muchen said.
“Yeah!” Bai Li nodded. “That illegitimate daughter of the Ye family is really something.”
Bai Li didn’t say it outright, but his words were laced with meaning—he was impressed by Ye Chu’s ability to get close to the future heir of the Xiao family.
Gu Muchen didn’t respond, but his face visibly darkened.
The charity auction officially began.
The bidding was intense from the start.
Everyone at the event knew that the real focus wasn’t what they were bidding on but how much they were willing to bid. This was a high-profile charity event with many reporters watching, so spending a large amount of money would help build a good reputation. A charitable image could benefit a company’s future growth and operations.
“Our next auction item is the first piece of jewelry designed by the famous jewelry master X—the Blue Star,” the host announced.
As the introduction continued, an usherette brought the jewelry onto the stage. The Blue Star lived up to its name—it was a sapphire pendant shaped like a star. What made it special was a small notch on the right side of the star, which reflected different colors under the spotlight, making it sparkle brilliantly.
“Do you like it?” Xiao Sheng suddenly asked Ye Chu.
Ye Chu had been distracted ever since she saw Gu Muchen, but hearing Xiao Sheng’s question, she quickly looked at the stage and answered, “It’s really beautiful.”
“I’ll buy it for you,” Xiao Sheng said with a smile.
“It’s too expensive. I don’t want it,” Ye Chu quickly refused.
“It matches your dress today,” Xiao Sheng said, looking at the Blue Star on the stage. Then, he added softly, “And it matches you.”
“Boss, I really don’t want it,” Ye Chu still instinctively called him "Boss."
“Consider it a bonus for accompanying me today,” Xiao Sheng said, raising his paddle.
“Mr. Xiao, one million,” the host announced.
Immediately, others began bidding, increasing the price by fifty thousand with each raise.
“Mu Chen, the Blue Star is so beautiful,” Ye Shiyun whispered to Gu Muchen, her voice full of admiration. She leaned close to him, clearly hinting at what she wanted.
She was certain that if Gu Muchen bid, they would definitely win the auction.
Understanding Ye Shiyun’s intentions, Gu Muchen raised his sign.
“Mr. Gu, five million! Does anyone want to raise the bid?” the host asked.
It was obvious that Gu Muchen was bidding for Ye Shiyun.
Ye Chu’s expression dimmed slightly.
Noticing this, Xiao Sheng raised his paddle again. “Eight million.”
“Mr. Xiao, eight million. Does anyone want to go higher?” the host asked.
“Ten million,” Gu Muchen immediately countered.
“Fifteen million,” Xiao Sheng raised his sign without hesitation. Then, he glanced at Gu Muchen and said calmly, “Second Young Master Gu, my friend really likes the Blue Star. Would you consider letting her have it?”
As soon as Xiao Sheng finished speaking, everyone’s attention shifted to Ye Chu.
Ye Chu clenched her fists, feeling deeply embarrassed.
Gu Muchen looked at Xiao Sheng, then at Ye Chu. His gaze was cold, and his voice was emotionless as he said, “Since this is an auction, anyone can bid however they like.”
With that, he raised his sign again.
“Twenty million.”
