Chapter 14 – The Fluid Specter and the Decision About the Trio

The march back to camp was silent, weighed down by the aftermath of the battle. Among the survivors, few found reason to celebrate. War was never about glory—it was about survival.

Sal walked among Konoha's ninjas, lost in his thoughts, when his eyes caught something unusual.

Three children.

They approached Orochimaru, Jiraiya, and Tsunade, hesitant yet determined. Sal didn't need to hear the conversation. He had seen this scene before.

"Yahiko, Konan, and Nagato…"

The three war orphans who would one day form the core of the Akatsuki.

Sal crossed his arms, observing from afar, confirming that events were unfolding as expected. He watched as Jiraiya crouched down to speak with them. It didn't take long for Orochimaru and Tsunade to step away, leaving the Ero-Sennin alone with the children.

The decision had been made.

Jiraiya would stay in Amegakure to train them.

Orochimaru approached the group returning to Konoha and, without preamble, announced:

— "Jiraiya won't be returning with us. He's decided to stay and teach those children."

Sal had anticipated this, yet hearing the confirmation stirred something within him.

"So, that's it… Their fate continues like in the anime. But can I change that?"

An idea sparked in his mind.

He remembered when he taught Paper Painting to Orochimaru and earned system points.

"If I gain points for teaching techniques to important characters, then… what would happen if I helped train Yahiko, Konan, and Nagato?"

Jiraiya was already staying to train them—that was inevitable. But if Sal found a way to contribute to their learning, to teach them some jutsu or help them grow stronger, he could earn a significant amount of points.

"If I play this smart, I can guide the Akatsuki before it even exists…"

A sly smile crossed his lips.

"This will be worth a lot of points."

However, Sal wasn't in a rush.

Returning to Konoha, he dismissed the idea of approaching Yahiko, Konan, and Nagato immediately. After all, they were just ordinary children for now—traumatized by war, lacking any formal training. Before anything else, they needed to build a foundation and understand the basic principles of being a ninja.

And Sal knew he wasn't the right person to teach that.

Jiraiya might be an idiot in many ways, but when it came to training talented disciples, he was one of the best mentors in the ninja world. It was no coincidence—every student under his guidance had become a genius among geniuses.

Yahiko, Konan, and Nagato.

Minato Namikaze.

Naruto Uzumaki.

All of them stood at the pinnacle of ninja talent.

"If I intervene too early, I might ruin everything. But if I stay patient and act at the right moment, I can maximize my gains."

With that in mind, Sal decided that, for now, he would simply observe.
