Darkness.
It pressed in on all sides, suffocating and still. Kai couldn't feel the ground beneath him, couldn't hear the wind, couldn't even sense the presence of Lyra or Aria. His body was numb, his mind adrift in the emptiness of the void.
His heart raced, panic threatening to claw at him. Was he dead? Had the energy from Solis' blast been the end of him?
But then, a light—faint at first, a soft glow that pierced through the dark like a distant star.
Slowly, he reached for it, pulling himself toward the source with every ounce of strength he had left. It was the artifact, calling to him, its power reaching into the darkness, guiding him.
With every step, the light grew brighter, more intense. Soon, the void around him began to twist, warping and bending as if reality itself were being unraveled.
He felt the presence of something—someone—approaching. A shadowy figure emerged from the light, a silhouette that shifted and flickered like a flame in the wind.
"Who's there?" Kai called, his voice echoing in the emptiness.
The figure didn't respond, but as it stepped closer, Kai's heart skipped a beat. The figure was familiar—no, it couldn't be…
"Aria?" he whispered, his voice thick with disbelief.
The figure that had been nothing but shadow began to solidify, taking on the form of Aria. But her eyes—her eyes were different. They glowed with a strange, ethereal light, and her face, though still hers, seemed to radiate an unnatural energy.
"Kai," she said softly, her voice like a song. "You shouldn't have followed me."
Kai took a step back, confusion flooding his thoughts. "What… what are you talking about? Where are we? What happened?"
"You've been pulled into the Nexus," Aria replied, her gaze distant. "A place between worlds. A place where reality bends and the threads of fate are woven together."
Kai's head spun as he tried to make sense of her words. The Nexus? What was she saying?
"But… what do you mean? I don't understand. You're not real, are you?"
Aria's smile was soft, tinged with sadness. "I'm real, Kai. But not in the way you think. Not here. This place… it's not meant for you."
Suddenly, the ground beneath his feet shifted, and the light around him began to pulse erratically. The world around him seemed to tear apart, like fragile paper caught in a violent wind. He reached out to grab Aria, but his hand passed through her, as if she were a mirage.
"Aria!" Kai cried, reaching for her once more.
Her form flickered, becoming more transparent with each passing second. "Kai, the artifact… it chose you. But it doesn't just give power. It binds you to something… something ancient and powerful. You have to be careful."
"What do you mean? What's happening to me?" Kai's voice was strained, his panic rising as the world around him continued to unravel.
"You're changing," Aria said, her voice now fading. "The artifact is awakening something in you. Something that will either save you—or destroy you."
Before Kai could respond, the light that had surrounded them began to crack and splinter. The walls of reality shattered like glass, and everything went black once more.
---
Kai's eyes shot open, the sudden shift pulling him from the darkness. He gasped for air, his chest heaving as he found himself lying on the cold, hard ground. The light of the Nexus was gone, replaced by the dim glow of moonlight filtering through the trees.
He blinked rapidly, trying to gather his bearings. His body felt heavy, but it wasn't the same feeling of exhaustion he'd known before. It was as if something inside him had changed. He could feel the energy in his veins, pulsing and thrumming with power, but it was different—darker.
He sat up, glancing around. Lyra was by his side, still unconscious but breathing, her face pale but unharmed. Aria was nowhere to be seen.
What had happened? Was it a dream? Had Aria truly been there—or had the artifact done something to his mind?
His gaze fell to the artifact at his side, still glowing faintly. The connection he felt to it was stronger than ever, and the strange energy that had filled him in the Nexus still lingered, buzzing in his body like a second heartbeat.
"Kai?" Lyra's voice was weak, but it brought him back to reality.
He turned to see her stirring, her eyes fluttering open. "What happened?" she asked, confusion evident in her voice.
Kai didn't answer immediately. He stood, his legs feeling unsteady as he tried to make sense of what he'd just experienced.
"The battle… Solis…" Lyra's voice trailed off as she pushed herself to her feet. "We were…"
But before she could finish, a deep, rumbling voice echoed through the clearing.
"You've made a grave mistake."
Kai's heart skipped a beat. He knew that voice.
Solis.
