The dizziness intensified, the world around Lyra becoming a swirling vortex of light and shadow. The guard's grip on her wrist tightened, a painful reminder of her precarious situation, while Caelum's presence radiated a chilling power she'd never felt before.
"Protection?" the guard scoffed, his eyes flickering between Caelum and Lyra. "A Shadow Prince protecting a Luminary witch? This is an act of war, not protection."
Caelum's purplish glow intensified, casting eerie shadows that danced on the forest floor. "She is not a witch. She is… under my care." His voice was laced with an undertone Lyra had never heard before, a raw, primal power that sent a shiver down her spine.
The guard's hand moved to the hilt of his sword, the metallic glint catching the faint moonlight. "You trespass on Luminary territory, Shadow Prince. And you protect a criminal. I should arrest you both."
"Try," Caelum said, his voice a low growl.
The air crackled with unspoken threats. Lyra felt like a pawn in a dangerous game, a game she didn't understand. She looked at Caelum, searching for a hint of the warmth she usually found in his eyes, but all she saw was a cold, determined mask.
"Enough," she whispered, her voice barely audible. Both men turned to her, surprised. "This… this is my fault. I'll go with you," she said to the guard, her voice trembling but firm. "Just… leave him alone."
Caelum's eyes widened, a flicker of something like fear flashing across his face. "Lyra, no!"
"It's the only way," she said, her gaze fixed on the guard. "If I go quietly, you won't have to report… him."
The guard's eyes narrowed, his gaze calculating. He seemed to weigh her offer, the tension in his shoulders slowly easing. "A wise decision," he said, releasing her wrist. "But understand, girl, this changes nothing. You will still answer for your crimes."
Lyra nodded, her heart sinking. She turned to Caelum, her eyes filled with a desperate plea. "Go," she whispered. "Please. Just go."
Caelum hesitated, his gaze locked on hers. The purplish glow around his hands flickered, then faded. He took a step back, his shadow melting into the darkness of the forest.
"This is not over, Lyra," he said, his voice echoing through the trees. "I will find you."
And then, he was gone.
The guard's hand closed around Lyra's arm, pulling her towards the path that led to the Luminary stronghold. As they walked, the silence was heavy, broken only by the crunch of leaves beneath their feet.
"Why did you do that?" the guard asked, his voice devoid of emotion.
"It was the only way to protect him," Lyra said, her gaze fixed on the path ahead.
"Protect him?" the guard scoffed. "A Shadow Prince? You are a fool, girl. He will not save you."
Lyra didn't respond. She knew Caelum wouldn't abandon her. But she also knew that her actions had irrevocably changed things. She had made a bargain with the shadows, and she had a feeling that the price would be far greater than she could ever imagine.
