The rain came down in sheets, drenching the cracked pavement of the old industrial district. Kai tightened his grip on his jacket, the hood barely keeping the water at bay. The cold bit into his fingers, but he had to keep moving. His destination loomed ahead, a crumbling building marked by graffiti and time.
The laboratory had been abandoned for decades, yet tonight, its darkness seemed to hum with life. Kai's friend, Jax, had sworn he saw something unusual inside a week ago, and though Jax had a knack for embellishment, Kai's curiosity got the better of him.
Pushing open the rusted door, Kai stepped into the gloom. The air smelled of mildew and burnt metal. He clicked on his flashlight, its beam slicing through the darkness. The lab was a graveyard of forgotten technology, broken monitors, shattered glass, and rusting machines that hummed faintly as if dreaming of better days.
"Jax must've been imagining things." Kai muttered, stepping over a pile of twisted wires.
But then he saw it, a faint glow emanating from a metal console in the center of the room. Unlike the other equipment, this one seemed pristine, untouched by decay. The glow pulsed faintly, like the heartbeat of something alive.
Kai hesitated. Every logical part of him screamed to turn back. Yet, the pull was irresistible.
As he approached, he noticed strange symbols etched into the device. They were not letters or numbers but shapes that seemed to shift when he tried to focus on them. The console's glow intensified as he reached out, his fingers trembling.
The moment he touched it, the world spun.
*************************
Kai found himself standing on a busy street, though nothing seemed familiar. The cars were sleek and silent, hovering inches above the ground. People walked past, their faces illuminated by holographic displays projecting from wristbands. The air was warm, with the faint scent of ozone and something floral.
"What the…?" He whispered, turning in place.
No one seemed to notice him, even as he stumbled through the crowd. He caught his reflection in a nearby storefront, his clothes were the same, but everything else was different. He didn't belong here.
A distant explosion rocked the air, and Kai turned to see smoke billowing from a towering skyscraper. The people around him screamed and scattered, but Kai remained frozen, watching as strange, armored figures descended from the sky. They moved with precision, herding the fleeing crowd.
A voice crackled in his ear. "Target acquired. Proceed with extraction."
Kai's heart leapt. Who were they talking about?
Before he could react, one of the figures turned directly toward him. Its visor glowed red, locking onto him.
"Subject identified. Initiating capture."
Panic surged through Kai as the figure raised its arm. A beam of light shot toward him, and he raised his hands instinctively. The world flickered, and he was back in the lab, gasping for breath.
*************************
The console's glow had dimmed, but Kai's hands still shook. He stumbled back, nearly tripping over a pile of debris. What had just happened?
His breathing slowed, and the questions came tumbling in. Was it a dream? A vision? Or had he actually been somewhere else?
The sound of a distant door slamming jolted him from his thoughts. Kai killed his flashlight, plunging the room into darkness.
"Find it." A voice hissed, low and menacing.
Kai's heart raced. He crouched behind a toppled desk, peeking out just enough to see the figures entering the lab. There were three of them, dressed in dark tactical gear with strange emblems on their shoulders. They moved with practiced efficiency, sweeping the room with flashlights and scanning devices.
"It was activated recently." One of them said, his voice clipped. "The residual energy is strong."
Kai clenched his fists. They were looking for the console, and possibly him.
The leader of the group stepped closer to the glowing device, inspecting it. "Secure this area. No one leaves until we have confirmation."
Kai's mind raced. If they found him, he was as good as dead. He needed a way out, but the only exit was the door they had entered through. His eyes darted around the room, landing on a rusted ventilation grate partially hidden beneath debris. It was small, but it might work.
Moving as quietly as he could, Kai crawled toward the grate. Every creak of the floorboards beneath him felt deafening, but the intruders didn't seem to notice. He reached the grate and began pulling at it, the metal groaning in protest.
"Did you hear that?" One of the figures said, turning.
Kai froze, his breath caught in his throat.
"Over there!"
Panic overtook him. Kai yanked harder, and the grate finally gave way. He scrambled inside, the sharp edges of the metal cutting into his hands and knees.
The sound of footsteps grew louder as he crawled as fast as he could. The narrow shaft twisted and turned, and Kai prayed it would lead him outside.
Behind him, the voices echoed through the vents. "He's in here! Cut him off!"
Kai's lungs burned, and his muscles screamed in protest, but he pushed forward. The shaft ended abruptly in another grate, this one leading to an alley. With a final burst of energy, Kai kicked it out and tumbled onto the wet pavement.
The rain soaked him instantly, but he didn't stop. He ran, his footsteps splashing through puddles as the shouts of his pursuers faded into the distance.
*************************
Kai didn't stop running until he was several blocks away. He ducked into a shadowy alcove, pressing his back against the wall. His chest heaved as he tried to catch his breath.
What had he gotten himself into?
The glowing device, the strange vision, and now these armed intruders, it was all connected. But how?
Kai reached into his pocket, his fingers brushing against something smooth and cold. He pulled it out, a small, metallic disc etched with the same shifting symbols as the console. It must have fallen into his pocket when he touched the device.
He stared at it, his mind racing. Whatever this was, it was important enough for people to kill for it.
And now... they were hunting him.
