Darkness swallowed them as they plummeted into the abyss. Wind howled past Isagi's ears, his heart hammering in his chest. The fall stretched on far longer than it should have, as if the space itself was distorted.
Is this… some kind of teleportation trap?!
Then impact.
Isagi landed hard, the ground beneath him feeling unnaturally soft. Dust and debris scattered into the air as he groaned, pushing himself up.
"Ugh… I hate falling."
Asha coughed nearby, waving away the dust. "Are we dead?"
"No," Lyle muttered, sitting up and rubbing his head. "But we might be soon."
Fenwick landed last, somehow managing to land gracefully, his robes barely ruffled. "It seems we've fallen into a hidden chamber."
Isagi looked around. The space they had landed in was unlike any dungeon they had seen before. Glowing blue symbols lined the ancient stone walls, pulsing with an eerie rhythm. Crystals embedded in the ceiling provided a dim, otherworldly light.
"This place… doesn't feel like part of the dungeon," Asha muttered, scanning the area warily.
Lyle nodded. "Agreed. It feels… older."
Isagi took a step forward, and the moment his foot touched the ground, the symbols on the walls flared to life. A deep, resonating voice echoed through the chamber:
'Only those who walk the path of truth shall claim the light.'
The ground beneath them trembled. A stone door at the far end of the chamber slowly began to slide open, revealing a dark passageway.
"That's not ominous at all," Isagi said dryly.
Fenwick adjusted his staff. "A hidden passage within the dungeon… This could lead to something important."
"Or something deadly," Lyle countered.
Asha smirked. "When has that ever stopped us?"
Isagi took a deep breath. "No turning back now. Let's go."
They stepped forward into the passage, unaware that they had just entered one of the most dangerous trials of Tenria.
The corridor stretched ahead, narrow and damp, the flickering glow of the ancient symbols their only source of light. Their footsteps echoed against the stone, the air growing colder with each step.
"This place is giving me the creeps," Asha muttered, tightening her grip on her daggers.
Lyle walked beside her, sword raised. "Stay sharp. If this is an ancient part of the dungeon, there could be traps."
Fenwick, running his fingers along the glowing symbols on the walls, furrowed his brows. "These aren't just decorations. This script… it's pre-Tenrian. The language of the first adventurers."
Isagi looked over his shoulder. "You can read that?"
"Not completely," Fenwick admitted, adjusting his glasses. "But I recognize some of it. It's speaking of… a 'Path of Ascension.'"
"Sounds fancy," Isagi muttered.
The further they went, the tighter the passage became. Eventually, they reached an open chamber, much larger than anything they had seen before. The walls stretched impossibly high, and in the center of the room, embedded in a raised platform, was a pedestal with a glowing crystal orb.
"That looks important," Asha said, stepping forward.
"Or deadly," Lyle countered, stopping her. "It could be a trap."
Isagi stepped ahead, staring at the crystal. "There's only one way to find out."
The moment he placed his hand on the orb the room came alive.
The walls shifted, ancient gears grinding into motion. Symbols flared with bright golden light, and suddenly, three massive armored statues detached from the walls, their eyes glowing with an eerie blue fire.
"Called it," Lyle groaned, raising his sword.
The statues moved with surprising speed, their massive weapons crashing down as the group scattered. The ground trembled with each impact.
"Anyone got a plan?!" Isagi shouted, dodging a massive hammer swing.
Fenwick pointed to the glowing symbols on the statues' chests. "Aim for the core! That's their weak spot!"
Lyle dashed forward, slicing at one of the cores. His blade struck true, sending cracks through the statue's form, but the creature retaliated with a backhand, sending Lyle flying across the room.
"Okay, not fun," he groaned, pulling himself up.
Asha used her agility to weave between attacks, her daggers glowing with enchantment as she sliced at another core. The second statue stumbled, but didn't fall.
Isagi activated his skill, his sword igniting with blue flames.
"Let's see how you like this Flame Edge!"
He slashed forward, his attack colliding with the final statue's core. The explosion of energy sent the creature reeling, cracks spreading through its body before it shattered into dust.
Asha and Lyle finished off the remaining two, and as the final statue crumbled, the ground stopped shaking.
A deep voice echoed once more:
'Trial completed. The Path of Ascension is open.'
The crystal orb in the center pulsed one last time before dissolving into light.
A door on the far end of the chamber slid open.
"…I'm guessing that's our way forward," Isagi said, catching his breath.
Fenwick nodded, excitement gleaming in his eyes. "This place is far more significant than we thought. We might be on the verge of discovering something incredible."
Asha grinned. "Let's hope 'incredible' doesn't mean 'more things trying to kill us.'"
With their weapons still drawn, they stepped through the newly opened door, venturing deeper into the secrets of Tenria.
