Chapter 2: A Good Idea

The church wasn't anything special—just a small, quiet place where they gathered for lessons every Sunday. Elias, Lina, Gabriel, and Gabriella arrived together, stepping into the familiar wooden pews as the other students settled in.

Sister Ana stood at the front, her hands folded as she waited for silence. When the chatter faded, she spoke.

"Next week, you'll have a written exam on everything we've covered this month. I expect you all to study well," she announced.

Elias sighed. Another exam. He wasn't bad at studying, but he knew how much everyone else dreaded it. He leaned slightly toward Lina and whispered, "I have an idea."

Lina glanced at him, curious but waiting for more.

After the lesson, as they walked outside, Elias finally shared his plan.

"We should make a group chat," suggested Elias. "It'll make studying easier, and maybe people will actually help each other for once."

Lina blinked at him. "Wait, you? Studying?"

Gabriel raised an eyebrow. "You don't even study in your own class, and now you want to help ours?"

Gabby didn't say anything, but she gave him a look like she was trying to figure out if this was some kind of joke.

"I study," Elias defended.

"No, you cheat," Lina corrected.

"Yeah, didn't you get caught last month?" Gabriel added.

Elias groaned. "That was a misunderstanding."

Gabby finally spoke, her voice dry. "You wrote answers on your arm. In pen."

Elias sighed dramatically. "Fine, I may have a history—but this time, it's different. It's a group effort, not just me trying to survive."

Gabriel shrugged. "Well, as long as you're not copying off of us, I'm in."

Lina was already pulling out her phone. Within seconds, she'd added all four of them into the chat.

"Welcome to Ana, nerds," declared Lina.

"Ana?" repeated Gabriel.

"Like Sister Ana. Since she's making us suffer with this exam," explained Lina with a grin.

A notification popped up on Elias's screen. The group was officially created.

For three days, nothing happened. The chat sat there, empty, ignored.

Then, on Monday morning, the first message arrived.

"Hey, anyone up for some study help?" asked Gabby.

Elias's pulse quickened when he saw her name.

"Sure, what do we need to cover?" responded Gabriel.

"Math, mostly. I'm not getting some of the stuff in the last chapter," admitted Lina.

"Same here. I'll be at the library after lunch," mentioned Gabby.

Elias stared at his screen for a moment before finally typing.

"I could help. Got a couple tricks up my sleeve for this stuff," offered Elias.

He hesitated before sending it, reading it over twice. Did it sound too eager? Too casual?

The message sent before he could overthink it.

For a second, he wondered—what if he made Gabby dream about this? About him? About a moment where she realized she actually liked talking to him, where she felt something?

No. That's way too boring.

If he was going to get her to like talking to him, it had to be real. Not some easy shortcut that makes it boring. But I'll use this power on others to make her mine somehow.

Just like that, the chat came alive. The messages kept flowing, and suddenly, studying didn't seem so bad. Elias liked the idea of this—talking with them every day, being part of something.

But more than anything, he liked seeing Gabby's name pop up on his screen.
