chapter 17: An old friend

Hotaru's words hung heavy in the air, her knuckles tight around the tea cup. Tension settled between her and Sai like an unwanted guest.

Sai leaned back, her sharp eyes narrowing. "That's not surprising. You drew too much attention. The moment you sheltered Kai, you tied your fate to his. Kurogane doesn't forget or forgive."

Hotaru swallowed hard. She knew that, but hearing it out loud made it real. "That's why… I'm not asking you to fight with me, Sai. I just wanted to warn you. If they find out you've been helping me, you'll be dragged into this too."

Sai sighed, crossing her arms. "You're an idiot. You really thought I'd sit back and watch from the sidelines while my only friend takes on an entire assassin syndicate?"

Hotaru's heart clenched. Only friend. The words hit deeper than they should've.

Sai stood, brushing imaginary dust off her skirt. "If you need me, you know where to find me. I don't need a formal invitation, Hotaru. You've always had my back, so now I'll have yours."

Hotaru felt warmth spread in her chest, but before she could say thank you, Sai's signature smirk returned.

"Besides, if you die before me, who else am I supposed to tease endlessly?" Sai's grin was wicked, but her eyes were soft.

Hotaru laughed, despite the fear coiling inside her stomach. "I'll survive just to spite you."

Sai opened the door to leave but paused. "And Hotaru… don't fight alone. You're terrible at asking for help, but even assassins need allies."

Hotaru watched her go, her mind spinning with plans, fears, and fleeting hope.

Allies, huh?

She had no idea that within 24 hours, her house would turn into a circus — one she'd never escape.
