The change in the air made my lips tremble. The wind hit our faces as we rode so fast it felt like something far more serious had happened than what Karl had told me.
He didn't answer my question about what happened to me earlier. He only said we needed to return to the palace quickly. A message had come—Rosalind had fallen seriously ill.
Even though I didn't want to leave—because our plan was to stay at the cottage for a few peaceful days, just the two of us, away from everyone—I knew the moment he mentioned his sister was sick that we had to go. Karl wouldn't be able to focus or rest until he saw her. He wouldn't be himself.
And deep down, I also wanted to see Rosalind. Part of me felt responsible for what happened. If I hadn't gotten involved, maybe she wouldn't have been locked away. Maybe she wouldn't have gotten sick.
