The air inside the war chamber was thick with tension. Torches burned low, casting flickering shadows on the ancient stone walls. Kael stood at the head of the long wooden table, his eyes scanning the gathered council members. Evelyn sat beside him, her mind still reeling from the assassin's attack the night before. She could still feel the phantom weight of the power she had unleashed, the way it had surged from her without command.
"The Council of Elders grows bolder," Lord Varian, one of Kael's trusted advisors, said, his tone sharp. "They would not send an assassin unless they believed she was a true threat."
Evelyn clenched her fists beneath the table. "Then let them see what kind of threat I can be."
A murmur rippled through the room. Some of the council members exchanged wary glances, but Kael's lips curved slightly in approval. He had seen what she could do. He had felt the power radiating from her when she stopped the assassin's blade midair.
"We are no longer dealing with whispers and spies," Kael said, his voice carrying authority. "The Council is testing us, and we must respond accordingly."
"They must be working with someone on the inside," Lysara interjected, her violet eyes gleaming with suspicion. "No assassin could infiltrate the fortress without help."
Evelyn met her gaze, unease settling in her stomach. A traitor among them.
Before anyone could respond, a sudden commotion erupted outside the chamber. The heavy doors swung open, and a Bloodborn warrior entered, his expression grim. "My prince, there's been another attack."
Kael's jaw tightened. "Where?"
"The northern watchtower. The guards were found dead, their throats slit."
A cold shiver ran down Evelyn's spine. Whoever was behind this was no longer hiding in the shadows—they were striking openly. Kael turned to Lord Varian. "Double the patrols. No one enters or leaves without my command."
Varian nodded and left with the warrior. The room fell into silence, the weight of the situation pressing down on them. Evelyn knew this was only the beginning. The war in the shadows had begun, and she was at the center of it.
Kael turned to her, his gaze dark. "We cannot wait for them to strike again. We must find the traitor before it's too late."
Evelyn took a deep breath, steeling herself. "Then let's start hunting."
