Chapter-(1)
"A pair of bloody hands"
He scratched his head and laughed. His heart was starting to ache. It didn't matter.
He was still feeling the gaze of many eyes. He could still hear the words "You, Nay Swan Inn ruined our lives." He knew it wasn't true.
His eyes were as pale as the dim lights. His heart was suffocating as if he were in a place without enough oxygen.
He lit a Marlboro cigarette and put it to his lips. He sighed until his eyes closed softly.
Behind the drifting smoke, there was a milky world.
This means that, his room was described poetically.
The walls, floor, and almost all the furniture in the room were milky. The curtains were the same.
There would be a black desk with a silver Apple desktop computer on it. There would be books neatly arranged on the shelves. Even if they were all together, it would be less than ten fingers.
He picked up the remote control and turned on the TV. He leaned back slightly, his arms outstretched.
A reporter from the Wall Street Journal stood in front of the courtroom, holding a microphone.
"Good afternoon, everyone. I'm Sophia Carter. I'm standing here in front of the San Jose Superior Court. Today's hearing could be a crucial decision for tech mogul Sun Energy and his Phoenix company. On one side he is being hailed as a visionary, and on the other, he is being accused of being a criminal."
The camera shifts.
On either side of the barbed wire are two different groups of people.
One side was shouting "killer", while the other was waving banners that said "Creativity is not fear".
In the middle lane, the police were walking with their batons tightly clenched.
Watching that scene, he remembered the philosophy of Prometheus. Prometheus stole fire from the gods for the earth. For that, he was chained to a rock and tortured forever.
He laughed again. His mind was as tangled as the cables in a server room. Stubbornness, sadness, and the desire to fight.
He threw out his cigarette into an ashtray.
On TV, a female reporter walked to the supporters' side. She pointed the microphone at the woman in the front row. The woman tightened her belt and turned to look at the camera.
After a long breath, as if exhausted by the oracles.....
"We cannot accept that AI is a danger to the human race. Every invention is always met with criticism at the beginning. When the typewriter was invented, they said that it could spread dangerous ideas. When electricity was discovered, they condemned it as an act of destruction of nature. But nothing can stop the progress of technology. What matters is how we use technology."
Then, from the front of the other group, each man who was shouting with his fists raised and his arms raised, changed perspective.
The man was shouting so loudly that his throat was almost breaking. His neck was rising and falling. His eyes were red and bloodshot.
As he was being given a microphone, he wiped the sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand...
"We can't deny that Mr. Nay Swan Inn is a brilliant scientist. But he must be held accountable for his invention. Now he's here to prove himself innocent. He's like the Oppenheimer of the 21st century. He built a dangerous weapon without thinking about the consequences."
The man finished his speech by pointing his finger at the camera.
He felt as if it were coming straight at his face. What an Oppenheimer of the 21st century.
Did he really ruin some people's lives? No... He didn't mean to hurt anyone.
Why do they want to make him a scapegoat?
He placed his hand on his forehead and closed his eyes.
He could see the mushroom cloud of light that had erupted from the explosion of an atomic bomb. He could see Cillian Murphy's eyes.
From those eyes, a phoenix bird as big as a dragon flew out.
People were running around in confusion on the ground. One of them was Elliott.
There was a pool of blood on his chest. His face was as torn as Harvey Dent's in The Dark Knight.
The bird swooped down and bit the doctor's head with its beak.
"Oh...no...it's not my fault."
He opened his eyes wide and jumped up. The ashtray hit him with his hand and fell to the floor.
The sweat on his back was like water.
Tears are a quick cure for sadness. So he tried to cry. It was hard.
Tears didn't even flow a little.
Hearing the soft sound of the door opening, he slowly turned around.
The first thing he noticed was the black lawyer's suit. Then the heart-shaped face, the long, tailored dress, and the tightly braided hair.
He immediately smiled. He knew that this smile was nothing more than a simple lip service.
She sat down in the leather chair next to him. She picked up the remote control from the front desk and turned off the TV.
"Lin Latt....myself"
He said that much and shook his head sharply.
Looking at his position, she couldn't believe it.
The CEO of Phoenix Company that she knew, Nay Swan Inn, was not like this. With his deep, steady eyes, he could penetrate the other person's mind. He usually walked with his waist straight and his steps slow and steady.
He could easily explain what he wanted to do and make it happen.
What kind of words should she say? He wasn't 100% wrong about this. Well… it wasn't all his fault.
She squeezed his hand and encouraged him. She thought her words would have an effect on him.
"You have to face it, for the future of AI technology, for the employees and users who depend on the company, we have no choice. Do you stay in a burning house or jump into a shark-infested water?"
The corners of his lips twitched. Then he sighed and walked to the window.
Outside, the California afternoon was scorching hot. The street was also noisy with people and cars.
But with the thick walls and soundproof windows, this room felt like a separate world.
He felt as if he had lost his basic human rights.
She hugged him. She also put her face on his back.
Her behavior was full of bloodlust, but it was more of a desire to keep him safe.
His back trembled a little more than before.
"It's not my fault, Lin Latt, if I had listened to you, the situation wouldn't be this bad, now I have blood on my hands."
He looked at his palms sadly and said.
"Listen to me, Nay, if your hands were bloodied, I would make a scarf to wipe the blood off."
Her body turned slightly at her words. He gently held her hand.
His gaze was as complex as the tip of an iceberg. She couldn't predict.
She buried her face in his arms and hugged him tightly. His hands hugged her back.
She smiled as she thought back to her childhood.
Since she was a student. She decided what was most important to her and then did the rest haphazardly.
When she was in school, she got perfect A+ grades in subjects like geography and history, but she never got more than a B in subjects like math.
That wasn't because she was not intelligent. It wasn't because she wasn't interested. She didn't need algebra and integration in her future life.
So, she focused on the probability part of math.
She tried to pass the rest of the classes and understand the basics of economics and law. She learned languages.
As they say, her mind doesn't want everything to be bad all the time, but wants to make the best of what is already good.
So even after knowing his dark side, she chose to stay by his side.
