The place was indeed a bit old-fashioned. The yellowish walls, the moss in the corners, the cracks on the door, and the dust and cobwebs everywhere all pointed to that fact. However, that was only on the first night. The next day, everything changed. Just as the young master said, Jebe, the old man who had opened the door for us, cleaned my room thoroughly. Not only that, but the young master also had someone deliver a lot of clothes. I suppose the century-old clothes I was wearing were indeed a bit unappealing.
Seeing such a clean room made me feel much more comfortable. I walked into the bathroom, where the water was already prepared. I took off the clothes I had worn for a century and lay down in the water, sinking deeply to the bottom. As the water rushed into my ears, my mind buzzed, but I felt strangely calm.
After putting on my nightgown, I lay down on the bed, but my eyes couldn't close. My mind was filled with memories, both good and bad, happy and sad. They mingled into tears, which slowly ran down my cheeks.
But this wasn't crying, it was just letting some feelings flow out of my heart, maybe this would make me feel a little better.
After releasing the pain and sorrow inside me, I finally felt a bit lighter, but still couldn't fall asleep. So I unsealed myself, stood by the window, and used my vampire eyes to look outside. Everything had a mirage-like beauty to it.
The night was so still, especially in this rural setting. The trees around me were gently breathing in the breeze, and the late-night insects in the grass were still chattering away.
The moon gradually climbed into the sky, and I continued standing there, enjoying the tranquility. I hadn't felt this peaceful in a long time.
Suddenly, a scream came from afar. My heart jolted, and my body leaned out the window. But at that moment, someone knocked on the door, "Are you asleep?"
I had no choice but to pull back and open the door for the uninvited guest. As I opened the door, my long hair transformed into short hair to my shoulders, and my blood-red eyes turned black, though still cold as ever.
"You really haven't slept yet!" he said knowingly, walking into the room. Upon seeing the window open, he sneered, "Do you like the night?"
I didn't respond, nor did I make any move. I simply stared at him, especially at his feet, on which stood the tears of the night.
He glanced back at me, saw where my gaze was, and cheerfully walked over to the window, "I just hunted a vampire. It's being executed right now. Maybe tonight's screams will continue, and I thought you might be scared, so I came to check on you."
I nodded and walked to the bed, lying down.
He had been kind to me these past couple of days, almost excessively so, but I couldn't bring myself to like him. Perhaps because he was a night hunter, perhaps because he was fake, or maybe because someone already lived in my heart.
Seeing that I had fallen asleep, he didn't speak again. He stayed by the window until dawn, then closed the window and left my room. The moment the door closed, I opened my eyes, the blood-red hue flooding back into them.
He usually wasn't around during the day, but at night, he would gather everyone in the hall for dinner. This time, I was invited as well. So I put on the clothes he had sent and walked downstairs. In the hall below, there were many people. Besides the three who brought me here, many were strangers.
"Come, sit here!" As soon as I came downstairs, the young master waved at me and pointed to an empty seat next to him.
Immediately, murmurs filled the room, but when the young master turned around and glanced at them, the whole hall went silent, even the sound of mosquitoes could not be heard. I sat down next to him, my eyes cold and indifferent.
"Alright, everyone, let's eat now! There's still work to be done later," he commanded, and everyone immediately began eating, including me. I first drank a sip of milk and then took a small piece of bread, chewing slowly.
Everyone ate quietly when suddenly Jebe ran in, reporting, "Young master, the female servant is back!"
"Oh! Did she bring anything back?" The young master raised an eyebrow and asked.
"No, but she's a bit injured."
"What?" He was startled, stood up, and rushed outside. Seeing his retreating figure, everyone shook their heads and sighed. I continued eating, and when they heard the sound of my knife and fork, they all turned to look at me. They were surprised that a mute, especially someone connected with vampires, was being treated so well by the young master.
"Little girl, how have you been these past days?" Old Niu, still smiling, was the first to greet me.
I nodded in response.
"That's good. By the way, we're about to catch that Saphrot, the one who kidnapped you. You'll have to identify him when we do!" he said casually, but his words made my heart tighten, and my gaze became much colder, sending out a flash of light.
"What's wrong? Do you really hate this Saphrot guy? Did he kill your parents? Tell me, if that's the case, I'll catch him and let you take revenge yourself," Old Niu said, completely misunderstanding my intent. But that was fine, as long as there was news about him.
"Killed?" Just as the young master returned from outside, he overheard the conversation.
"What happened, young master?" Old Niu replied, "That guy, Saphrot, killed the little girl's parents, so I decided that once we catch him, the little girl will take revenge herself."
"Oh? He killed your parents?" The young master sat down and looked at me. I just stared at him coldly, and whether he could read anything from my eyes, that would depend on his skill.
"Well, if that's the case, I also agree with Old Niu's decision." He patted my back. "Don't worry, I'll make sure you get your revenge."
"Master, how is the female servant?" Suddenly, someone asked. I looked up and met a pair of cold eyes, filled with hostility toward me. I simply moved my gaze to the plate in front of me and continued my meal.
"She's fine, just a minor injury. She'll be fine after a couple of days of rest." The young master glanced at me, but I didn't react. But who exactly was this female servant, and why were they all so concerned?
"Oh, that's good." The other person visibly sighed in relief.
"Twei, it seems like you're really concerned about my female servant!" The young master coldly laughed, a trace of killing intent in his eyes.
"She's a trusted aide to the young master, and since you value her so much, I naturally care for her as well." He then turned to me, "But I don't quite understand, why does the young master care so much about this mute? On the surface, she does look pretty, but she's so cold, and she's just a child. The young master shouldn't be interested in her, right?"
"Hmph!" The young master coldly sneered, then suddenly put his arm around my shoulder. "You're wrong. I'm very interested in her."
"Why?" The other person couldn't help but stand up.
"Because of her coldness. She's indifferent to everything, ignoring life and death. Don't you think she's special? I've never seen such an existence, except for the gods in legends." He leaned close to my ear. "Am I wrong?"
I gave a cold smile, put down my knife and fork, and stood up, leaving the table.
"You..." The young master suddenly stood up. His tone was slightly angry, as I had shown him no respect. But I ignored him and continued walking upstairs. Halfway up, Jebe suddenly came running up, panting, "Master, it's bad! The female servant's wound won't stop bleeding."
"What?" Everyone stopped paying attention to me and rushed out with the young master. The hall was left empty except for me.
The female servant?
I was curious about who this person was, who seemed to be so important to everyone.
But curiosity was just curiosity. I wouldn't go to see her because she had nothing to do with me.
I slowly walked upstairs and closed the door behind me.
