Yin Xiu, with dark circles under his eyes, casually scooped up a cup of black water from the bucket, which had coffee bean residues floating on the surface. He took a big gulp of it, and only then did he feel a bit more energized.
After working the night shift for a whole week, even though Yin Xiu's physique was much stronger than that of an average person, he couldn't help but feel completely drained.
Following the worker out of the factory building, Yin Xiu, as usual, walked up to the inspection table and placed all the tools on his body on the table.
"Hey, Yin Xiu, why have you been working the night shift recently? Didn't you always say that staying up late is harmful to your health?"
Mike had a ruddy complexion, obviously having just had a pleasant night.
Yin Xiu just smiled and shook his head, not giving too much of an explanation.
Compared to staying up late, staying in Guangmingli at night was probably even more harmful to his health. In the past week, three more people had their vital essence drained, and they were all young men.
Although Uncle Ming had some skills, Guangmingli was too big, and he was alone and couldn't do much on his own.
The closest they had ever gotten to that fox demon was when Uncle Ming managed to cut off one of its claws, but then the demon fled in a hurry.
Even the descendant of the celestial master couldn't do much about it. Now, the people in Guangmingli were even more panic-stricken. As soon as night fell, every household kept their doors tightly shut and wouldn't open them no matter who knocked.
"Yin Xiu, I've thought about it carefully. It's really a pity for someone with your abilities to join the Beggars' Sect."
Mike was very serious. "I heard that a new Yin-Yang Dual Cultivation Club has opened in Jordan. They're recruiting some young men of the right age. I think your appearance and figure are quite suitable. If you join, you could even get the position of a male mentor."
Yin Xiu gave him a disdainful look. "I mean, can you introduce me to some more decent guilds?"
Mike pouted. "Decent ones? I want to join them too, but would they even consider us?"
Knowing that this guy was about to start complaining again, Yin Xiu waved his hand at him and walked out without looking back.
After returning to his place, Yin Xiu flopped onto the bed, and only then did he have the time to sort out his thoughts.
Because of working the night shift continuously, his practice this week had to be slowed down. The Guiyuan Gong was only effective when practiced at night. Practicing it during the day always felt a bit off.
Although it was a pity, in the current situation, going up to the rooftop to practice in the middle of the night was just asking for trouble.
It seemed that he still had to find some time to go to the black market to buy a few sets of boxing techniques. He didn't expect to eliminate demons and protect the people, but at least he could have a chance to save his life when encountering those monsters.
Just as he was continuing to think, there came a knocking sound on the moldy wooden door.
Yin Xiu sat up, hid a dagger under his pillow and then tucked it into his waist, covering it with his clothes. Then he slowly walked to the door.
He hid his body behind the wall before answering the door.
"Who is it?"
Upon hearing Yin Xiu's voice, the person outside knocked on the door more rapidly. "Brother Xiu, it's me, Ah Hua."
"Oh, it's Ah Hua."
Only then did Yin Xiu let down his guard. While unfastening the lock on the door, he greeted her.
"Aren't you going to the theater to sell cigarette rolls today?"
Ah Hua didn't reply. She skipped past Yin Xiu and plopped down on the edge of the bed. "I'll go later."
"Right, it's still early. Sit for a while then."
Yin Xiu handed her a glass of water. This girl who liked to wear flowery shirts was the only person in Guangmingli that he could have a proper chat with.
Ah Hua reached out to take the glass of water. Only then did Yin Xiu notice that there was a thick layer of bandage wrapped around the little finger of her left hand.
He asked, "What happened? Did you get hurt?" Ah Hua looked down at her finger and just smiled. "It's just a minor injury. I accidentally cut myself while rolling tobacco leaves."
After a pause, she added, "Brother Xiu, do you think Uncle Ming can catch that fox demon?"
So she was worried about this?
Yin Xiu shook his head. "Guangmingli is too big and has a large population. It's hard to notice if one or two people die in a short period of time. Although I believe in Uncle Ming's magical power, it's still too difficult to catch that thing."
"Then what are you going to do? I heard that you've been working the night shift for a week already."
"Which rascal spilled all my personal business! What can I do? It's not like I can go and catch that fox demon myself."
Yin Xiu scratched his head and then took a look at the somewhat moldy ceiling. This small room, which could only fit a bed and a wardrobe, could be seen in its entirety at a glance. It was so small that it would be crowded even with one more person.
But the rent for this place was really cheap. If he couldn't live here anymore, with Yin Xiu's income, he might end up on the streets soon.
Ah Hua blinked her eyes. "How about you go and ask Uncle Ming? If nothing else, you can at least get a talisman from him."
"That's actually a good idea." Yin Xiu nodded. "But I heard that Uncle Ming has been missing for several days, and many people are looking for him."
This was the news Yin Xiu heard at the breakfast stall on the roadside that morning.
"Go and look for him. You can't just sit around and wait for the fox demon to come to your door."
Just as Yin Xiu was about to reply, Ah Hua suddenly leaned into his arms and hugged him tightly.
Her body was as smooth as jade, and there was a faint fragrance of flowers. It made Yin Xiu's heart flutter a bit, but also feel a bit bitter.
What a pity, little sister, you're not the right one for me...
Coming back to his senses in time, Yin Xiu managed to break free from her grip with some effort. Pretending not to see Ah Hua's resentful look, he walked over to the cabinet, opened the drawer, and started rummaging through it.
Ah Hua tilted her head and asked, "Brother Xiu, what are you looking for?"
"Gloves." Yin Xiu didn't turn around. "Didn't you always wear the gloves I gave you when you rolled tobacco leaves before? The factory distributes two or three pairs of them every month, and there are more than enough. By the way, why aren't you wearing them today? Did you lose them?"
Ah Hua seemed to still be in a daze from the previous setback. After a moment of hesitation, she said, "Oh, I was in a hurry when I went out today and forgot to wear them. I'll definitely wear them next time. How could I be willing to throw away the things you gave me, Brother Xiu?"
"It doesn't matter if you lose them. I still have a lot here."
As Yin Xiu spoke, he placed several things on the table and then stretched out his hand to beckon to Ah Hua. "Come on, try these on and see if they fit your hands."
Ah Hua seemed reluctant. She obviously wanted to do something else rather than look for a pair of gloves.
Only after Yin Xiu called her again did she slowly stand up and walk over.
As she walked, her voice became even more coquettish, more charming than before. "Brother Xiu, why don't we stop looking? I liked the feeling when you hugged me just now. Could you please..."
"Sure." Yin Xiu's head was still buried in the drawer.
Upon hearing this, Ah Hua immediately let out a charming laugh. "I haven't even said what it is yet, and you already said yes? You're so naughty!"
Then she happily opened her arms and rushed towards Yin Xiu to hug him.
Just then, Yin Xiu turned his head. He was holding an unknown can of liquid in his hand and suddenly splashed it all over her.
As wisps of blue smoke rose, a howl of a wild beast rang out, making Yin Xiu's ears ache.
"I could tell from the very beginning that you're not the real Ah Hua!"
