The night was restless. The fires in the heart of Vaelthane burned low, casting flickering shadows against the half-rebuilt walls. Despite the progress made during the day, an uneasy tension settled over the kingdom.
Kael felt it.
He stood at the edge of the old courtyard, staring into the distance. The land stretched far beyond the ruins, but something about the darkness tonight felt heavier—like unseen eyes were watching.
"You sense it too."
Fenir's voice came from behind him, low and steady. She hadn't spoken to him since their argument earlier, but she was here now.
Kael didn't turn to look at her. "Something isn't right."
Fenir moved beside him, arms crossed. "The shadows are restless. I don't like it."
It wasn't just the shadows. Even Rhia had seemed on edge, her normally calm presence tinged with something unspoken.
Then—
A flicker.
A shift in the air.
The torches lining the walls sputtered, their flames bending as if something unseen had moved past them. A whisper—not words, but something old and hollow—curled around the edges of Kael's thoughts.
A king does not hesitate.
Kael's pulse quickened. The voice wasn't just in his head.
Fenir went rigid beside him. "You heard that?"
Before Kael could answer, a sharp crack split the air.
The shadows in the distance moved.
Not natural movement. Not the wind.
Something was coming.
The Warning
Kael turned sharply, already reaching for his sword. Warriors rushed to the walls, their faces tense as they peered into the darkness.
A rider emerged first. Cloaked, hood drawn low, their horse moving at a slow, steady pace. Behind them, more figures followed, their presence barely disturbing the night.
Not enemies.
But not allies, either.
Kael stepped forward as the first rider dismounted. A woman—tall, clad in dark leathers, her face partially obscured by a hood. But her voice was clear when she spoke.
"Your kingdom is waking, Kael. But so are the things that once slept beneath it."
The words sent a chill down his spine.
He knew, without asking, that whatever had been watching in the dark…
It wasn't done watching.
